968 forum wars perspective
#1

As a grizzled veteran of the 968 web forum wars I was looking forward to settling in the 996 Rennlist forum as I search for my new car... or so I thought.

Let me just say that the 968 crowd has no corner on the market of the sorts of 'adventures' we had here (and on other boards) in the 'good old days.' Just mention RMS, IMS or 996.1 v. 996.2 issues and watch the fur fly!

I miss you guys.

You know, it's never too late to buy another 968..... Part of the reason why I own them is because of the camaraderie....

yup - friendly bunch - you can tell a lot about an organization by the number of people that show up to local events - i think this event got pulled from the site because of sour grapes - a number of "events" that were attempted to be organized over there were cancelled due to non-participation, and those that didn't get cancelled didn't get a lot of participation - this one was clearly going to get a lot of participation

no worries

looking forward to the next 968forums socal member event - working on planning that now

From my own perspective, I can tell you that as I set off my journey some years ago to find the “perfect Porsche for me”, I quickly realized how completely non-productive some of the other forum became. They all-too-often bog themselves down in marque, model, series, mines-better-than-yours bashing and they even attack their own like a pack of wild dogs! Senseless and shameful. What a waste of time.

I’m proud of our forum and the way everybody does such a good job of minimizing all of the negative stuff the other guys suffer from. Thin skin doesn't seem to be a clinical problem within our ranks. And thanks also for not swearing in here. My Frau and I really appreciate that!

Big Fat Thanks to Eric for creating THE 968 forum, Flash and all of the other fantastic thread-meisters and of course the dozens of other unsung heroes that make ours clearly the best.

Bravo!

Now pat yourself on the back and get back to work!

I've wondered about that. Would the friendships endure without the car? Clearly the reason we come to the events is because of the people - you can see loads of cool cars in any parking lot. But, isn't it the car that binds us? Can I really show up to an event in my wife's van, or ask my friendly SoCal 968 brethren to help me install a sway bar on my RX8?

Not quite an existential crisis, but I have thought about it a tick or two...

At the New Hope Auto Show my friend showed up in a Lotus Elise, and Jerry showed up in his 911 and I enjoyed everyone. Car people are car people and I can bond with Porsche guys, rolls royce guys or American motors guys. Last Summer I went out of my way to talk to a group of Javelin AMX enthusiasts...

There's an ass for every seat.

Sorry for going OT but as a kid, I remember my Mom having a Pacer...looked like an upside down tupperware bowl. For the laugh factor, I would like to find a lime green Gremlin...I almost bought a sky blue one but it had way too much rust.

Back on topic, I've found myself visiting certain forums less and less due to all of the bickering and flaming. This is also the main reason why I don't particpate in any of the A/V forums or other on-line crap related to my regular day job industry. Hell for that matter, I don't belong to any detailing forums either. Many of the very opinionated folks have to hide behind the computer since they have fewer social skills but are always quick to attack. This is supposed to be fun, remember.

I will say, I've never had any bad things to say about the fine folks here.
Not once.
This is the only place this holds true for me, and I'm on quite a few forums.

This forum has always been a "fun" place for me.

i think it has become clear that this is the place to be - almost everyone has figured that out - it has been great to see that most everyone has been able to get past the past - thankfully those days of bickering are over - now, we just generally ignore those sites and the people on them who have nothing better to do than dredge up old tired nonsense and start fights - the only other things going on are the mutual admiration society threads, and that is really the sound of one hand clapping

i pop in from time to time to all of the sites to see what is going on, and there are 5 or 6 people who continually try to resuscitate sites that don't stand a chance of being noteworthy, if for no other reason than due to their design limitations - they are really just more of a distraction than anything else, and constantly full of misinformation - there are some threads going on right now that are either just plain wrong or at least misleading

no worries - we have it all here - eric did a great job of setting this up, and hopefully we can keep it growing and building to what he dreamed of

if somebody doesn't want to come here, that's fine - they can play by themselves - we never expected everybody to agree or choose to be here - we knew there were some that couldn't put aside their personal issues and participate - the problem children of the past really only go to one event a year, stay by themselves and don't interact with the rest of the group, and always leave early - all the silliness and whining really has no effect on anything, so in the end, it is much ado about nothing anyway

meanwhile, the event tomorrow promises to be a great one - there might be as many as 20 cars there - a real testament to the shape of things

I am SO there. I am even, hold your breath, going to wash off my car tomorrow morning in the cold weather - all for you guys!!!!!

Can't wait to meet everyone and catch with those already known (like Jim)!

Unfortunately, I won't be able to stay too long. Tomorrow is supposed to be a nice day and I really need to press forward on my house project. The outlook for weather here after T-day is dismal at best. If I can get some time in tomorrow and perhaps Sunday, I won't have to worry about the rain too much....

I am trying to make the meet at the Barn tomorrow - my car will not be as detailed as everyone else's, and it will look all of 170,000 miles old. Is there parking in the rear of the building for high mileage daily drivers?

Doesn't matter what the car looks like, only that you show up...Crespo's coming in his trailer truck.....have a 356 coming, and probably a boxter or 911 Targa...the point is who, not what...
