968 Celebration in 2007?
#1

Haven't seen anything here and I seem to recall that it was about this time least year that some ideas were being generated. Is anyone thinking of this? I would be pleased to do it here but, realistically, it is just too far and nobody other than me is on this forum in Atlantic Canada. Better for one person to drive 1700 km than everybody (or, more likely, nobody).

Well you never know Kim! My wife and I really enjoyed our vacation to Nova Scotia a few years ago when we were living on Long Island. There are some wonderful driving roads with beautiful scenery and the very best scallops we ever tasted. Let me know if you set something up......Bob Blackwell.

I'd like to see us come South or Central. I'd made two trips to Hershey, but don't know if I can work the time in next year. Charlotte, Atlanta, Nashville, or Gatlinburg, Tn. would really be great sites. There are many car shows at Gatlinburg every year. A great vacation spot with something for everyone.

Yeah, maybe a few laps on Road Atlanta and a drive out to "Tail of the Dragon" could be fitted in. I'll come, Bob Blackwell.

I'd be willing to travel anywhere within 200 mlles of home (Philadelphia, PA).

Don Hassenbein provided some information to me for last years event and I would be willing to add my Lessons Learned to anyone that wants to take on the mantle. I can not speak for Pete, but, given the politics of last years event and several other negative forces I will not be hosting this year.

We held a very quiet, small, successful event for RS Barn in the fall and might be willing to expand on that if anyone likes the idea of Bucks County for a destination.

Jay

I really like this idea!

Let's start looking at some thoughts:

1. Some of us are still working stiffs and vacation time is few and far-between

2. Central location will bring more folks

3. Nice places to drive/see will bring more folks

4. Weather is a BIG factor

5. Having a 968 part swap/sale could be cool

There is a Boxster gathering called Boxstoberfest that's held once a year in September in Fredericksburg Texas. They usually have around 60 or so cars show up for a Friday night dinner, Saturday quick concours and a LONG drive through some beautiful roads. This is attended by folks from about 800 mile radius.

There are some 'other' Boxster events each year - one on the east coast and one on the west coast. All three are well attended and have had high reviews by all attendees.

My suggestion is we mirror that with a East coast, Texas, West coast gathering - but not EACH year for all three. It helps to keep the event special but not having them so close together, plus it helps for us po folk that have to save our pennies to be able to attend a multi-day event.

One year we have a west coast, the next a central...etc...

Keeping it to a weekend - maybe a three day weekend? Where most folks have the day off is VERY desireable!

Short gatherings are easier to plan..

There should be at least TWO 968 drivers in the area willing to be the planners/hosts of the event. I would be willing to help with the central Texas one.

I've been on the Boxstoberfest committee two years running (I used to own a Boxster) and still attend their events with my 968 and have a blast!

Just some thoughts to start some serious dialog!

The Celebration has been declining in attendance, so I'm not sure this get together is an attraction anymore.

It is a major effort in putting this event together and the enthusiam doesn't seem to be there. Maybe this has run it's course and small spontaneous events are preferred. The weather certainly is a consideration, that is why Jay and I planned for May and June. The flap with "insurance" certainly didn't help last year. To get 60 to 70 cars doesn't seem possible anymore and to plan an event for that many and then only have 30 cars show up is very disappointing. So what to do?

Why not resurrect the 968 gathering in conjuction with the Hershey Swap Meet? The event is a done deal and the space is there. Little or no planning required and no money issues. Centrally located - or at least worth the drive. I drove up from NC in 2000 in my S@ and had a great time.

The main problem with the Hershey Swap Meet has been the weather. I only remember one year in the past 6 that it has not rained. Maybe the rain gods could take a rest this year.

I would like to put forward the idea of a "968 Celebration" Weekend to take place on the weekend between Mother's Day and Memorial day (May 18th- 20th weekend). Various events would take place around the country all under one banner and (ambitiously) could be webcast between various events. Most people will not drive more than 500 miles during a weekend so smaller regional events would be more accessible. That was our intent in calling our event "968 Celebration - Newtown", with the hope that others would hold the "968 Celebration - Boston", etc. on the same weekend.

Jay

cosimo - for the insurance all you have to do is get your local Porsche club to 'sponsor' the event. Longhorn Region has been doing the insurance coverage for the Boxstoberfest for 3 years now...

94silvercab - i like your time of year.

So Flash does Southern California, I'll do central Texas (Austin, San Antonio area)

Anyone up for the east coast?

I would be interested in a gathering. When I owned the 928, we did the sharks in the mountains run sponsored every year by one of the big parts houses 928 specialists. We drove the blue ridge parkway and had a terrific time. I would be happy to help coordinate a gathering if the Chesapeake Bay area [Annapolis] interests anyone. I could get the Chesapeake Region PCA to help. Annapolis is about as scenic of an area as you can ask for and makes a great vacation spot, especially in September after everyone is back at school.

If Annapolis does not have enough appeal, the mid atlantic is close enough for me to participate and I would be willing to help someone else coordinate.

Annapolis is fine by me as well as most anywhere mid-Atlantic. I agree with most others that there is a limit to number of miles to drive, so that need to be accounted for. There are 4 or 5 of us here in the DC area that regularily participate and another 6 or 10 in the Phila/NY/NJ area. IIRC, we had 22 or so in Newtown last year and it was good fun. Jay has experience as does Ron (Cosimo). I'd help out in any way I can. I'd have to run it by my landlord here at my office, but I have enough parking and perhaps access to an indoor lift (again, need to check availability from my neighbor) for at least some portion of an event of some kind. It would be a shame to not continue this tradition. I attended a Rennlist meet in Rockville, MD which was also fun, but nowhere near the same as getting together with fellow 968 people. I was the only 968 there.

I'd be available to help put it together if we have it in Atlanta or Birmingham. I might be able to get the Barber Track in Birmingham to let us show the cars there if we wanted to have it in Birmingham. The Barber museum tour would be worth a 500+ mile drive.

And for the sixth year, I'm hosting a Colorado event (see "Gateway/Moab Tour" posting). Looking forward to seeing a bunch of 968s there.

Huskydog,

Count me in for Annapolis - I used to live in DC many years ago and haven't been back for quite some time. I could do some promo work up here in Toronto to get a few more Canucks to come along to lend a bit of an "international" flavour (we'll bring beer) to the event. Paul

I would second the idea on a FUN RUN in the mountains. White mountains along the blue ridge parkway or even in the poconos somewhere would be a hoot! Our cars could really get a good workout! Or, even look for a GO-Kart track somewhere would be fun as well as one of the events.

If you guys get the PCA Panorama, check the most recent issue for a summary on PCA Seattle's event. Now, THAT sounded fun! Maybe we could do something similar? Happy holidays to all!
