I have a 944 S2, which I've owned for a little over a year. I'm aware that it's not a 968!

 

However the OEM alarm system is exactly the one installed in the 968 apparently. I've found the alarm box and the part number on it matches. The alarm goes off intermittently at all hours, and has done for months. I'm tearing my hair out trying to find information on that alarm system, so I'm really hoping that this dedicated 968 community can help me - at the very least a PDF owner's manual with info on how the alarm functions, what sensors it responds to etc.

 

I do hope you'll excuse my intrusion. I love tinkering with my car, but it's my daily driver, so I have to be careful that I don't break it, and can always put it back together again for the next day's drive to work.

be sure to check that the glove box closes tightly.  If it wiggles open that might trigger the alarm.  Same for the hood release and hatch.

I've checked all the switches: doors, boot, glovebox, bonnet. All of them seem to be of the type that breaks contact when the 'door' is closed, so it's hard to see how they would accidentally re-contact whilst closed. They all seem to be functioning correctly and more than switch.

 

Based on further understanding gleaned from searching the forums here for a couple of hours, I have determined:

 

- I can workaround the problem with the trick to lock without arming the alarm: with driver's door shut, open passenger door, lean in to hit the 'lock' switch on the console, then close passenger door.

 

- When I arm by locking the door with the key, the flashing LED in the door pins flashes twice repeatedly. I understand this means that some part of the alarm isn't armed properly, which might be indicative.

 

- At some times in the past I've had funny issues where locking with the remote would immediately unlock again. I think this suggests I need to take the doors apart and have a good clean/adjust/lube of the door handle mechanisms.

 

- I'm also wondering if the new radio I installed a few months ago is implicated. I understand the alarm is connected to it in one or two ways, but I don't understand how exactly. Can anyone help me understand that?

For the radio, there is a wire that connects to the frame so that when the radio is removed it grounds out and triggers the alarm. In regard to the doors unlocking after locking sometimes, it could be the contacts inside the electric motors. They send a signal to the module to confirm lock/unlock position. The code you would get is "position of drive elements implausible" but since this is on a S2, there isn't a diag connector to look at what the codes are. Or to check the events log to see what is triggering the alarm.

Also, if all else fails, take the module apart and have a good look at the circuit board. I had one that would randomly lock while driving and it turned out to be a bad part on the circuit board

I had a similar problem, I lubed the door lock actuators and the problem went away. It's been 4 years, so it seems to have worked.

 

Pull off the door panel, locate the actuators, pull the rubber boot back and lube the shaft, along with all the locking linkage.

 

Your problem may be different, but this worked for me.

If you like your nightrest than open the right door. Use the controlbutton on the console to lock the doors. Close the passengerdoor and the alarm is out of order. Have a good night.?

Yup - I found the trick to lock it without arming - that's a very useful workaround whilst I fix it!

 

This evening I had the centre console apart to figure out what the extra switches do and if they're implicated. There's a blank rocker switch at the left end of the row that doesn't seem to do anything, and a much smaller rocker below that which also doesn't do anything.

 

However I discovered today that there is a red LED dangling around underneath the console (usually invisible unless you unscrew the console to unveil it), which starts flashing ONLY when the ignition is in the on position AND the big blank rocker switch is pressed. Why on earth would that be the case? I assume it's some vestigial indicator of something, possibly related to the third party Cobra alarm (which seems to be behaving correctly - it's the factory alarm that's misbehaving), but why would you ever want an LED flashing when the ignition is ON? I can't think what it could possibly be indicating, or what the switch could be for. Any ideas?

Absolutely - I definitely do have the factory alarm, plus a Cobra alarm installed on top. But that doesn't explain all the strange wiring and that LED that blinks only when the ignition is in 'RUN' and that blank rocker switch is on. I simply can't fathom what it could be indicating. Following the wiring is foxing me as multi-coloured wires disappear into great black snakes and then appear in distant corners of the car, sometimes as different colours

 

I found a diagram of the connectors to the alarm box, which labels two terminals as "radio 1" and "radio 2". Can anyone tell me what these are supposed to be connected to? I replaced the radio recently, and there's a whole mess of hard to understand wiring behind there too, which I can't entirely fathom.

I have one rocker switch installed in an originally blank space that is an ignition cut off installed by the PO. It sounds like maybe they installed the Cobra and wired up a special cut-off or something?  How many rocker switches does your car have?

It has the full set of usual controls (for a 944 S2) plus this one extra at the far left:

mystery rocker (and another much smaller one just below it, that is also a mystery)

lock central locking

door mirror adjustment side selector

rear wiper

sunroof

headlight adjust wheel

 

I'd post a picture but I don't think the forums will let me (rookie), or I can't figure out how.

 

I can start the engine regardless of the position of the switch.

Somewhat related question - is there a fuse ( or any other way ) which disables only the audible part of the alarm , but leaves the rest of the system working ? If not, how can the entire alarm system be disabled ? I find little use for it, no one steals 968s anyway ...

I wondered about that myself - if I could turn off the horn it wouldn't be so bad as I'd just have flashing lights every now and then. The connectors into the (dedicated) alarm horn seem to be quite permanently affixed, not surprisingly. A wire could just be snipped at the horn end, or (better for reconnecting and not looking bad) at the connector to the alarm box, and I assume that would have the desired effect, but for all I know it would make the alarm more upset.

 

My alarm remains unfixed.
