1991 944 S3
#1

Hello all! New member, Greg, here from Spokane, WA. I have a 1991 944 S3 (a 944 S2 with a 968 engine). Because my 944 has the heart of 968, I thought this site would be helpful. I've also been giving some consideration to upgrading the 5-speed to a 968 6-speed. If anyone has any advice or BTDT, please let me know. Thanks!

Welcome,

I'm sure you will find someone here to help you plan out your transmission swap.

Welcome. A 944 with a 968 engine,less weight and same power, hmmmm!

As per above, there is probably a thread here, or someone knows someone who has done this before.

starting with an S2, and then adding what amounts to essentially the entire 968 drivetrain, i'm willing to bet that the weight will be nearly identical when it's all done. they are only 132lbs apart to begin with.

and it still won't be a 968. i don't really see the point, other than cost. why not just get a 968?

The OP will have to answer, of course, but one possibility is that his engine died, but he liked the car otherwise, and he found a 968 engine for a reasonable cost.

in for a penny, in for a pound kind of thing i suppose.

a lot of work though for a car which, in most people's eyes, doesn't merit it.

lol - of course, at $160k in the blue car, i have no room to talk

Flash,

A sleeper 944 would be a nice thing. Now, he can also possibly fit your SC kit to it - and whoooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo it goes.

Car madness comes in all forms and most of us on the forum have it in some form or another. Others look at us as if we have lost our minds (I might even admit to it), but, unless you are a car person - you wouldn't get it.

Bit like women and handbags and/or shoes.

At least with the S2, he doesn't have the curse of the frog-eyed headlights that we all love/hate. <img src="/forum/images/smilies/968/wink.png" class="smilie" alt="" />

??? no, he has those horrible square pop ups

craig - since the S2 is not much lighter than the 968, i don't see how it would really be any faster, especially if he changes the box and torque tube. i think it will be almost the same in the end. but, i get the sleeper thing.

it is interesting to see what lengths people will go to on their car. i know my own journey has been fascinating for me.

$160k????!!!! That's insane but you have the satisfaction of having exactly what you want in a car, as much as reasonably possible.

it may seem insane, but if you stop to think about it, there is no other car that does what this one does, for that amount of money, so it's really about wanting it all.
