3-spoke wheels?
#21

I'd check out the .pdf referenced above and draw your own conclusions on that. I'm very happy I live where I do: I rarely lock the car around town and got rid of the wheel locks a while back.

I ordered this wheel yesterday. Looking forward to it!

Seen it,

Want it,

Gotta have it,

Gonna get it !!!!

It really is a clean look and makes the Gauges easier to see! (trying to justify)

It IS next and at the top of my list.

Now... I just have to get it done without 'HER' (she who makes my life happy or miserable) seeing me do it!

When "we" got the car it was so pristeen. low mileage, and unmolested that one of the conditions was that I wouldn't "mess with it", I could do whatever I wanted to the 944 (and have) but wasn't suppose to adulterate the 968.

She hasn't noticed the euro turn signals, think SHE is going to notice the wheel? Hmmmm...?

Is there anyway of adding a 3 spoke Steering wheel with an airbag? Stuttgar Performance has one for a 996/986/993 but I wasn't sure if anyone had created an adapter for it to work in a 968.

Speaking for myself, I wouldn't miss front airbags - I buckle up. They were designed to save the lives of people who don't.

Another bonus with this wheel is you can activate your horn as it was meant to be activated - by slamming your palm down hard on the center area of the wheel and screaming "#&#%*&(!!" - instead of hunting for a tiny little button off to the side.

The stock wheel looks like something out a Ford Taurus anyway.

I agree with Mr. Quinn. The first generation airbags (as in the 968) are calibrated to restrain an unbelted 200 pound man. That is one hell of a punch in the face.

The later generations of bags have been de-tuned to reduce the punch, assuming belts are actually used.

And yea, having the horn where it is supposed to be fixes another egronomic quirk.

Thanks Greimann, and btw, love your work (and those rims!) - can't wait to get a 968 to put all that stuff in "D

Interesting commentary...

I personally feel that an airbag is not something you appreciate until you need it. I do buckle up, it's the law here in Maryland (and I'm over 200lbs.). I can cope with the bruises from being punched in the face by an airbag much better than I can handle the dental bills from biting my steering wheel. Front air bags usually activate in a head on collision.. A lap and shoulder belt doesn't provide the restraint of a five point safety harness, so if that other driver crosses the center line, I don't want my easily accessible horn to be the only thing between us..

My $.02

This steering wheel ( Three spoke 996 ) is design for later model Porsches so maybe the airbag is de-tuned, and it comes in colors other than black. The question is, what will it take to make it fit in a 968?

Any ideas?

Wow, that really does look amazing. I might have to do this. How hard would you rate this mod? I'm fairly handy, but am no car expert.

Oh, just read the instructions. Doesn't look to complicated. Unfortunately, the wheel only comes in black.

I have a gray interior. Think a black wheel would look silly?

I know this thread is about the 3-spoke wheel, but since the airbag question has come up, I'll point out that I (and others have) installed the 4-spoke 996 which retains the airbag but updates the look and gives the "modern" horn button - the entire airbag. FWIW, no spouse would notice this change.

Anchor - I see from above that the 996 wheel comes in colors other than black. A few questions for you:

How much was the wheel and where did you get it?

Is the installation procedure essentially the same as the 3 spoke? Was it tricky to keep the airbag?

Thanks!

I found my brand new 996 wheel w/airbag on eBay. IIRC, I paid about $225. I also found the clockspring mechanism on eBay, about $50. Despite my nervousness, this turned out to be a pretty straightforward conversion. You have to "cut and paste" some wires to reconcile the new clockspring mechanism with the 968 wires, but this is not complicated - you're only dealing with 4 wires. Keeping the airbag required no added effort. The only part of the process that requires third party assistance is that the hub of the new wheel has to be machined - its stock dimension is too thick and doesn't allow the steering wheel retaining nut to securely hold the wheel in place on the steering shaft. Splines are matching, so there's nothing need in that area.
