1994 Midnight Blue 968 w/M030 For Sale
#1

Just saw this Midnight blue coupe for sale on eBay. Midnight blue is my first choice in color (as you may have seen from my previous posts) it also has M030! Is there anyone in the Minneapolis area that might be able to check this car out for me? I am 12 hours away in Grand Rapids, MI.

The car looks nice from the pics (appears to have quite a few rock chips on the fascia), but new clutch/flywheel, alternator, water pump, power steering pump, etc He did not mention when the belts were last serviced of the cam chain and gears inspected (I e-mailed him and am waiting for a response). Besides the usual questions, are there any others you can think of that I should be asking him?

Thanks for all your help!

Looks like a good one for the price Dave! Probably had the belts done at the same time as the waterpump, that is usually standard procedure with these cars. The seats do not show any wear considering the mileage. Good luck! Bob Blackwell.

He is going to do some additional research on the belts. The only records he has on belt replacement was at 93k miles. He and I both thought that the belts would have been replaced at the same time the water pump was replaced as well, but that invoice does not show record of any belt service. If they WERE last replaced at 93k, they are long overdue.

Due to the rock chips, how much would it cost to have the front "re-sprayed," and what all does that entail? Do the strip down all of the panels that are to be painted, or do they have some magical way of just taking care of the rock chip damage?

Sorry to say Dave, there is no "magical way" to handle rock chips. I took a paint & bodywork class prior to repainting my 924S in the Air Force Base Auto Hobby shop and it is just a lot of tedious work. The paint has to be block sanded down to be completely smooth, then new paint applied. Modern cars like ours use a two-part painting system called Base & Clearcoat. You spray on the base color first, then wait about 20 minutes and spray on the clear coat while the base is still not fully dry. The cost depends on what the local labor rate is and how much of the preparation work you are willing to do for yourself. Sanding is not technically difficult - just time consuming and boring. Good luck, Bob Blackwell.

A quick update... this car ended up in San Diego. I saw it this week and it is now being worked on by a reputable shop.

It does look pretty good, however, the cams were missing teeth and a belt needed replacing (missing?). It is all apart in the shop right now. I don't know the total dollars required to bring it back to spec. The $12,000 on ebay was only a starting point.

I wonder if a good PPI would have caught that?

I always had my doubts on spending the extra money on a PPI, thinking people are honest in most cases and proper documentation on maintenence would be enough, but this makes me think otherwise.

oh, I'm a big proponent of the PPI, I just hear way too many horror stories! I'm not sure they would have been able to catch that particular problem though...I could be wrong

David,

Which shop got the car in San Diego? I'm kind of curious since Dieter's wouldn't even quote on a head gasket or service the transmission on our 968. I've been going to Black Forest, even though they are much farther away.
