ZF rack

Just picked up a spare rack. I have purchased other items form this seller (Picasporsches) on ebay and have never been disappointed. He does really nice rebuilds and coatings.

Price real good at ~300$

Hmmmmm.....Autozone.........Maybe they do a good job on rebuilds...I don't really know



Lifetime warranty is a BIG plus.



The one above comes as pictured and there is a one yr warranty IF you change out your power fluid reservoir.



Also: I have slightly wider front tires than stock (255's on 8.5 rims) and they tend to follow every little rut. I am designing a steering damper mount and will see how it goes. Shold at least take the edge off. But has to be right size so that response is not limited.

banditsc: Thought that your autozone price was very good so I checked . At least in my zip code area they have the Beck-Arnley 'rebuild' original' for 390 with 210 core on top. 3 mos warranty. They also have Atsco brand for 180 plus core charge of 100. Limited lifetime warranty. These are both probably ZF rebuilds , but there are other brands out there like Biltron (350 + core charge)which may also be rebuilt ZF but looked terrible. I have seen good looking ZF racks for up to 1300 +core charge.



Just to get a clean rack for 300$ I think is a good deal. The fact that it has been replated and has new seals and looks like new out of the box is a plus. And I think the seller really takes pride in his work. For example, I bought an item from him which came with the mounting bolts. He included all the bolts and washers, newly replated, and with absolutely no tool marks in the metal. So I checked all others that I got from him. Out of twenty or so nuts and bolts I have received from the seller, only one had slight wear.



Still, it is a used item and you never really know what you are buying.

I get tramlining with 8.5 fronts with 235's.

Gets a little better when I run 40psi in the tires.

I'm not an expert on the subject by any means, but it appears that tramlining is influenced by many things (alignment, wheel/tire width, tire type, etc.) I can vouch for the tire type - the Kumho Ecsta's that came on my car tramlined horribly, but neither the Goodyear DS-G3's, nor the Sumitomo HRTZIII's I have now tramline to any noticeable degree.

I have 235/40/18 pilots on the front. They trampine less than other tires I have had. And it really only happens on the worst of roads.

I have the Autozone Atsco rebuilt rack on mine. It's a ZF rack, it still has the Porsche plate and numbers on it. I believe all the racks are ZF, I believe they were the only builders of the racks. The one I got was repainted in black, but you can't see it anyways so it's ok. The Atsco folks are in Arizona if I recall and are a big rebuilder of auto parts.

Here is a pic of the steering damper I plan to mount to the car. Anyone else with oversized tires do this?? Of course , this damper is made for a lighter car. I wanted to start small and work up. Could not find an adjustable racing damper. I will make a mount for two (one to each side , maybe...will see how it fits) but use only one and see if there is any improvement or worsening or no change.

It appears as if a few of you guys have changed your racks. I've been experiencing some "steering issues" and wonder what symptoms did your cars exhibit that pointed to the rack?



Also, when you changed racks, what else did you change and/or upgrade at the time? Tie rods? Tie rod ends? Bushings? Steering shaft?

same rack, new slightly wider tires and rims with near OEM offset (allowing slightly for size increase) AND crappy michigan roads....

i got rid of the bump steer issues by eliminating the rubber suspension bushings - all that rubber was rebounding



i have used dampeners like that before - they work, but it also puts a LOT of strain on the power steering pump - be careful
