Just got my PA classic car plates!
#1

I'd recommend that anyone who doesn't daily drive their '68 check with their state DMV/DOT/etc. to see if you have something similar...

PA DMV/DOT will grant classic plates to cars 15 yrs or older. Antique plates are granted for cars that are 25 yrs or older.

With PA classic plates, you never have to register again ($35 per year) - the registration is permanent for as long as you own the car. Fee was $75 plus another $22.50 for new title. I still need to get it inspected every year, but no more paperwork and money for registration. To get out of inspection, it has to be an antique - can't wait for 2019!!!

All you need to do is fill out a one page application (IIRC, it is form MV-104), submit it with the aforementioned funds, proof of insurance, the existing title, and four pics of the car... and you're done. In less than 3 years (if I keep the cab!!!!), I will have covered the $97.50 cost for the classic plate.

I am sure other states have something similar... Worth a look-see. The restictions on driving the car are pretty lax when compared with all the different classic car insurance policies.

YMMV

I have a regular PA plate, but a proven history of less than 5,000 miles/year makes my car "emissions exempt" so, no more checks as long as I stay under 5k/year.

Jay-

Tell me more. I don't come close to 5k a year in mileage... do I just need to speak with the inspection tech/garage owner about that? That would save even more money!

I use the same shop year after year, they know me...not sure what the formal procedure is, but I'm sure you won't have much trouble when you roll into the shop with that pristine cab

I use Creighton's in Newtown right near RS Barn. They know Pete and how he works so an inspection with them is almost drive through.

Under 5000 miles they wont do the emission test but you still pay for the exempt sticker.
