Looking for suspension advice
#1

I have a 94' hardtop and that I do not intend to race, however I do appreciate a well sprung car and above average handling. Looking for advice as to which way to go on this.
Will be installing the the shock tower and lower brace.
Should I consider really good shock/strut set up or go for the the M030 suspension or what? I will also be upgrading the wheels to 18" in the very near future.

any help would be greatly appreciated

I hate to be a typical Forums guy, but truly, "Search is your friend"...there are probably 6,000 posts (just by Flash) about suspension and possible mods, spring rates, torsion bars, sway bars, bushings, shocks settings, alignment, corner balancing, etc...Look around for a while and then formulate a few questions.

Regards,

Jay

Uh, ok. Guess I misunderstood what the forum was about.

Forum: "An Internet forum, or message board, is an online discussion site. People participating in an Internet forum may cultivate social bonds and interest groups for a topic may form from the discussions."

So anyway, talked with RSBARN on the phone today. Well, I asked a question, much like the one I posted, he listened then talked, a lot! I learned much.

He could have given me the short answer or blown me off, telling me to look it up somewhere, but instead he took the time to explain his recommendations based on his experience. Almost as if answering a question on one of those forum things only without asking me to read 600 posts.

In short he was awesome and never even tried to sell me anything, however I will be getting my suspension from him in next week or two followed up by the exhaust system and hope to have wheels located asap.

I have spent a great deal of time time reading a lot of threads on many different topics going back many years. I appreciate what you guys have gone thur over the years, it is nothing short of outstanding work, a great deal of time (and money), and truly an education for me. There is a tremendous amount of information, so much so that a search inquiry will yield an enormous amount of material! I see no harm in asking what people have done to their personal cars, especially if their needs were similar to mine, that unfortunity cannot be phrased as a search question.

I just got my 968 and it is a car that I wanted since I read the first article in Excellence magazine, of which I still have the very issue! I really enjoyed spending time on this site reading (not so much so for my wife but hey) and wish I would have discovered it sooner.
Thank you to those of you who have replied or sent emails with advice or suggestions, it is much appreciated

So what are you planning besides the braces. Can you provide feedback as you upgrade? Always interested in everyone's impressions when changes are made.
for my part, I upgraded to the M030 bars and it made a nice difference.

I understand the under brace makes a difference. keep us updated as I havn't made the jump to the braces yet. Too much other stuff to do. Luck

Absolutely I will share my experience!

It was recommended to me to do the sway bars first, then strut tower/lower assembly, in that order if I couldn't swing the dollars all at once. In addition he advised to check and address the rear shocks before the front as they tend to be the first to go/wear and that since I would not be racing the the "Yellow Monroe" were the shock of choice. Again for my particular application.

So I am a bit torn, I have the funds to do it all at once, however in the interest of an education I thought I would install the shocks and M030 sway bars first, then drive a week and add the upper/lower brace, that way I can A. feel what each change is doing and B. get better understanding of what it is doing.

I am fighting the urge to just run right out and do it all at once LOL!

As a note I will be doing most of the work my self, with the safety net of knowing that my brother-in-law is one of the best Porsche mechanics in the Dallas/Ft Worth area, with over 25 years experience exclusively working on Porsche.

first, let me say that this forum is absolutely about discussions and online social bonds, so you're not off base there at all

however, it is also an information archive, much like a library

that being said, and at the extreme risk of sounding pedantic, but hopefully to shed a little light on some things, try to step outside your own situation for a minute and realize that this site has a wealth of archived information in it - we have gone to great lengths to organize it so that you can flip to the area you want to know something about and read what will likely answer your questions without you having to even ask them - many things have already been discussed - some areas have been extensively pursued

all i think that jay was trying to say is to do some searching before the knee-jerk reaction to just ask a question hoping for an instant answer - there is a map in the tutorial that will show you how the site is broken down - there is, for example, an entire area dedicated to oem suspension, and an area dedicated to aftermarket suspension

we are indeed here to help - what gets weary sometimes is the repetition of generic questions like "what kinds of problems can i expect with a 968?", "will these wheels fit?", "what kinds of brakes should i run?", "what kinds of modifications can give me more power?"

these may seem like valid questions to you, and i suppose they would to anybody - however, the answers are already here and easy to find - doing some reading and searching will not only likely answer most of your questions, but also show you a lot of things you probably didn't think about

lol - of course, calling pete works too

so, have fun - read up - learn what others have done and why - see what makes sense to you - feel free to jump in anywhere - make friends - there are a ton of people here to help, and they love to do it

Thank you Flash, well put and totally agreed with. I will say that I have let my enthusiasm get a little ahead of me, first getting the 968, then discovering the forum, I cant wait to get moving with it all and obviously I am a bit excited about the possibilities.

To date, everybody has been helpful and encouraging and I think that's what its all about in the end.

Ok so whats the recommended PSI for my tires? KIDDING! LOL

Thanks again,
William Muldowney

Welcome to the forum. Just a friendly suggestion (nothing to do with searches and the like ) - Are you sure you don't want to at least consider tracking the car? You live very close to a fantastic race track, Motorsport Ranch. It's a "country club" track, but they continuously rent it out to clubs, and there are private companies that use it to run a lot of DEs (Driver's Education), as well as at least one pure driving school. Your car was born to run on the track, and don't worry, it can take the punishment. Doing DEs is a realtively affordable way to have an absolute blast with your car, especially with the mods you are doing to yours. Anyway, as I said, just a suggestion.

You definitely spoke to the right guy: you can do no wrong heeding Pete's advice. FWIW I had Pete install adjustable Koni's on all four corners this past March while he was rebuilding the bottom end of my motor & installing a replacement transaxle & new motor mounts. That was a nice complement to the new M030 sway bars and new OEM suspension bushings / caster blocks. I had new 968 control arms installed last year and the difference in the way the car handles is amazing. I've yet to add an upper strut bar and intend to do that when I get the firewall brace installed sometime later this year- something I'd recommend you consider. Pete can tell you more about this. I have autocrossed the car since and the improvements are astounding. Hope this helps.

Yes I am now considering racing the d&#m car! Thanks guys! LOL

I always knew I would end up there but I tried to tell myself I didn't need another hobby. Tracking the car is a great idea and compared to launching a NASA Shuttle, realitivlty inexpensive. I can just see it now....hun, I need another daily driver now....

Yeah that'll go over like a lead balloon.

But she been accommodating so far so we'll see. I just have to feed the box...the Jewelry Box!

I will continue with the current plan, suspension/brakes/stageII, unless of course anybody has better plan.

Yes, that's true, unless you snap a belt, or freeze a rod bearing, or blow a pinion gear, or something else the virtually never happens. Otherwise, cost-wise, the two are fairly comparable.

Well the Space Shuttle does have reusable booster rockets, so that might be a nod in its favor. lol
