Was just talking to a friend who is looking to buy a Porsche but refuses to consider a Boxster no matter how big of a bargain it may be, referring to it as a "chick car". To his credit ( misogynistic tendencies aside for the moment ) that's certainly not the first time I've heard that association being made.. he went on to say, " I bet you don't see many women driving 968s, do you ? " Ha, I wish I remember the name of the woman here in the Bay Area who is well known in racing circles, winning a lot of the autoX and track event she enters leaving most of the male drivers in her dust - 968 coupe ( in silver I think..) so I could introduce her to him [img]style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/dry.gif[/img] , but I digress..

The question did make me wonder nonetheless how many women owners we have on the forum.
I think "happysails2you" ( Kathy ? ) might have been the only one active for a while..

There are a few in the northeast corridor...some have attended the Hershey event(s)...but overall, you're right. I don't know of many.

I've also heard the Boxster "chick car" reference...but how many actual female owners vs. husbands who already have/had a Porsche who bought it "for his wife"?

at the risk of this becoming a boxster slagging session......

i drove a buddy's boxster about a week ago - this car had some minor mods, and was putting out about 280

sure, it was tight, and had all the "new car" stuff - it didn't suck, but it felt limp compared to my car - also, i did not like the way the front end felt "light" - there just wasn't the planted solid feel i have in my car, and he was on kumho track tires

it had me thinking, but as i was doing that, i kept saying "add this, change that, yada yada" - before i knew it i was up over $70k and still could not carry 2 sets of golf clubs, 2 cases of wine, a weekend of luggage and the wife, like i can in my 968 cab

common as fleas too

bang for the buck, out of the box, a nice car, but i'm still better off with the 968

but dan is right, there aren't too many girls driving these - not sure what that's about - maybe they just didn't make enough of the "mattel" colors to attract them

On my old Boxster board, there was a lady that lived in Martinez or something named Robin? I think she had a 911 Turbo, speed yellow. Or, maybe a GT3. She was nuts about that car and may have had a Boxster too. Maybe she had a 968 at one time and this is who you are thinking of?

Not sure, but this lady is from a racing family - they all track their cars, all have won multiple competitions, and she's leading the pack in awards. I met her briefly at one of the Porsche swap meets - many of the people there knew her and her accomplishments well enough to forewarn anyone who might have delusions they can outdrive "a woman" just because they're guys. But more to the point, she's winning all these competitions in a 968 She should switch to a 944 though, might win even more AutoXs.. ( I still think the 944 is a better handling car, but that's just me... had one for 18 + years and in pure stock form I think it handled better than my 968 which has a pretty impressive modified suspension set up )

Back on topic - Jay, the Miata IS a chick car, regardless of how agile it may be And so is the Boxster, even if the Boxster is a better driver than the 968. It's all about looks. If the car looks like a toy ( and both the Miata as well as the Boxster do, IMHO ) it's a chick car ! Not that there's anything wrong with that [img]style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/wink.gif[/img] I almost said " no different than any given convertible ", but I won't say that because then I'd be banned from the forum AND have to hire round-the-clock security to protect me [img]style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/laugh.gif[/img]

An no matter how big of a blast the following cars are ( some of which are so fast, and handle so well they can simply humiliate our 968s ) , no man should also be caught driving a :

Gotta watch it or the list of women members here might get smaller. We have an odd group and I think that some of us would say that a 968 is better than anything else even if we knew that it wasn't true. Great car - yes. Fun car - yes. The best car - I doubt that. Maybe in 1992-1995. Maybe, with MANY modifications but the real comparison isn't a highly modified no-expense-spared 968 against a relatively stock Boxster. I don't care for Boxsters only because they are commonplace - I NEVER see another 968 unless I am in my driveway. I have always liked vehicles that are uncommon. Cayman's are a bit less common. Mine is stock and, even though I am hardly a race car driver guy, I need to be careful in the 968 after driving the Cayman - it is a much more capable vehicle.

What are the characteristics of a "chick car"? How could we define it using a list of words or descriptions to create some basis for a decision? A Pink Cadillac could be an obvious example, but then Elvis drove one and even then Bruce Springsteen created a heart felt song about "her" car. How can one describe a "chick car"? Is it just that we have seen many of that car driven by women? Just by gut feel or general impression? But that would hardly be a conclusive way to evaluate the "chickyness" of any particular car.

i couldn't disagree more on the Elise though. When I look at it or the Exige, the feeling "girlie car" is the last thing that comes to mind.

Elise is not a chick car by any means, except that perhaps higher flexibility allows her to get into and out of it easier. However, also having driven one of those (in early stock form, not the Exige), that car is so quick and agile that it feels like you are sitting in a 200 hp cart - amazing. And the ride sucked - seats were aluminum pans with burlap bags. No AC, no radio, no nothing, but fast and "holy s*** did you see that turn I just made".
