Which ATF?
#1

What ATF is appropriate for the 968? I'm getting ready to pull the tranny on the "new to me" Tip Coupe to diagnose things and it will obvisouly get a new filter and gasket upon reassembly. What to fill with? Reason for asking is that I have lucked into an entire case of Pentosin ATF1, which I hear is pretty good stuff. It is a newer fluid and I guess is probably overkill for a lowly tiptronic and has lots of OEM meets or exceeds stuff on the bottle including Mercedes, BMW, Porsche and others for Dexrom III ratings. Will it work? Will it hurt anything? What says the forum?

Used Mobil 1 in mine but I changed it when I got it at about 100K miles and sold it by 140K. No problems at all but that was only 40K.

I've been using Dexron III for years, don't know about the Pentosin. And I also don't know which uses of the ATF might be affected by a different fluid: for example lubrication, hydraulic pressure, etc. AT rebuilds are expensive, we just got the trans rebuilt on my wife's Jeep and it was about $2,300 and that was the lowest bit we could find.

can't tell I never done a swap. just 6 years in the transmission. Fluid is looking good and I'm scared to change it with new fluid because it works very fine at this moment. New oil means new detergents..........

My 968's a 6-speed, but our BMWs are all automatics, and there are few topics that stir up as much controversy on the BMW forums as the wisdom or lack of same of changing the fluid in an auto trans, especially since BMW states that the ATF in their transmissions is a "lifetime fluid." Most say that's nonsense, that it should be changed on a regular basis, but many others say that it should never be touched. Personally, I'm not sure it matters much either way, because it seems that most auto trans failures are caused by things not related to the fluid. I went ahead and changed the fluid on my daughter's 04 325i at 94,000 miles (it was incredibly clean - even smelled new), but sure enough, about 18 months later, it started to slip. Seeing as the fluid change was so long ago, I don't think it's related to the slipping, so I guess in my case, I could have skipped the drain & fill, but I suppose that if it can prevent some problems, it's probably not a bad idea.

I believe those who advise you should never change your transmission fluid ( surprisingly including dealers and independent mechanics ) outnumber the opposite school of thought by a very large margin. However, I think most are talking about cars

starting in the 2000's , not older models. No idea why that is, whether it's a technological leap in the fluid development that took place around the turn of the century ( yeah, I said that , lol ) or a tech leap in transmissions design , or the combination of the two , but withholder cars I'd still change it before 100k miles rolls over. BTW, on newer MBZs I heard the dealers also tell you the engine oil never needs to be changed ?! Has anyone else heard this ? Sounds crazy to me ( and this is from someone who drove 15k-20k miles before changing regular motor oil :-@ )

Don't know why but the 100k number just feels right. I changed the ATF on my tip at 100k as did I on my wife's beamer which has "permanent" ATF. It just feels right.

Does Porsche have a tiptronic transmission fluid change and service interval shedule ( mileage and/or time ) in the 968 service manual ? Or noted anywhere else, if not in the manual ?

As far as what ATF to use it's a personal preference. I can tell you that when I got my tip I went through the car from front to back which included removing the engine and transmission. When I put it all back together I put an new gasket and filter in the transmission and filled it with Amsoil's ATF. The car had about 80K on it at the time and I had no idea what the transmission's history. The car drives and shifts like a dream. I am a big believer in Amsoil products. The stuff just works great and I've never had a problem with it, especially their ATF. Used it in my old E class Mercedes and my current M class Mercedes. Can't say one bad thing about their products (except possibly the price, and with the preferred customer discount it might be cheaper than some of the other stuff). Brand loyalty is a personal thing and I'm not preaching or trying to convert anyone but just my 2 cents.
