968 cams - better look
#1

I can't emphasize enough that we all need to do the cam inspection at 50K on these cars. Recently purchased a 968 with 100K miles. It was obvious that noone had ever looked under the valve cover while there were receipts for most other services. When I did look both cams needed replacing as well as pads, chain, etc.

The best deal around on cams appears to be Pete at the RS Barn. He has exchange cams with new sprockets and a heavy duty chain available and you can get them both for about what you would pay for one new one and that's if you shop the new one real hard.

I must be lucky, I have three 968 engines in my garage (two in cars and one spare) and the cams look fine on all three. My spare engine with 87K does need to have the pads replaced.

So RS barn basically gives you two cams for the price of one cam (compared to other shops), plus heavy duty chain. But you have to send in your existing cams, correct?

On a related note, should the cams need to be replaced, would it be wise to go in and replace other things such as valve springs, etc, while the cams aren't there?

160k miles, and nothing looks out of the ordinary. I am expecting to do some work to them shortly, but no problems. VarioCam parts may be a different story...shopping right now for pads and all the other goodies.
