Wheel Types
#1

I have read much on this site regarding wheel types and wheel options. As a newbie to the 968 (have owned for only 2 weeks now) and to this site, I am starting to get an idea of the variations, but it would be extremely helpful to see some pictures of ORIGINAL MOE wheels to accompany the names. I know there is some controversy over the names (Cup/C2Turbo, Cup1/Cup2 etc.) and I don't mean to open up this debate again, but for the novice, a picture to go with the name (proper and/or common name) would be very helpful.

Three photos for you of wheels available on North American 968s.

Photo 1: Kim's beautiful cab with the standard 16" Cup 1 wheels. These wheels were found on most of the 968s and available all 4 years.

Photo 2: Here's my car with the optional (code 403) 17" Cup 1s which can be found on all 92s, 93s, and some 94s.

Photo 3: Here's Raj's cab with the optional 17" Cup2s which can be found on some 94s and 95s.

Other wheel related options would be the painted crest center caps and you could also get the wheels painted to match the body color although the outside edge was left the grey color. I'm sure others will post with the other variations of the names but those are the three styles.

For anybody who just wants a peek, allow me to toss out this blatant copyright violation. Comments in green are what I actually hear/see people use, although using "dinner plates" for the 928 slot or flat wheels may not be very common. YMMV

Man ... I am no good at this. I look at the wheels on my coupe, and I think they are C2 Turbo's, but when I look on the wheelenhancement.com site, and the pictures posted so far, they just seem to be different in some way ??? ... more square at the edges of the spokes, narrower spokes ??? I am not thinking that they are anything special, but I just find it hard to tell. Is there part numbers or codes stamped on the wheels? Can someone tell me what these wheels are. Thanks

Thanks. I went back and had a closer look at your post with the three pictures. I can now see they are the same as on the Dark Blue Cab - 16" Cup.

BTW .... are the headlamp washers OEM on that car. I don't believe that I have seen a picture of them yet on another 968.

i wonder where the 1 and 2 reference came from? i can't find it in any porsche documentation - what i can find is this:

the 16" wheel that came on these cars is C2 Turbo 16

the 17" wheel that came on the early cars is C2 Turbo

the 17" wheel that came on the later cars is 993 Cup

you can see pics with the correct names at www.wheelenhancement.com too - they are the biggest seller of porsche wheels (other than porsche itself), so i tend to trust them

Thanks for all of the information on wheel types. I didn't mean to open up old wounds, but it sure is nice when everyone is talking the same language when it comes to these wheels. I will have to make it out to some 968 events to see and compare for myself.

The names and comments are right (well by right I mean they are consistent with popular convention) except the wheel pictured as a D90 is actually a 951-S club sport. Minor detail. The D90 looks similar, but the lip is different.

I think you mean C2 not C2 turbo. The later 964 Carrera 2 came with these wheels hence the name C2.

+1 I also go with what Wheel Enhancement calls them, when all else fails! And looking at pretty wheel pictures.....

Jeff - are you sure the 16" standard 968 wheel is called a 16" cup 1? I think that's really confusing and I never call it that (or heard it called that). Aside from C2 5-spoke, I think they should either be called 968 wheels, 968 cups, or 16" cups, something to that effect. But putting a 1 in there just makes it konfoozing.
