Rear suspension and laignment questions.
#1

Hi guys,

I have an early 944.

I've been replacing suspension pasrts bit by bit and getting big improvements, I love this car!

Anyways, I came to the last piece of the puzzle which was the rear beam.

I thought "I know! I'll just stick in a 968 item!!!"

Didn't quite go to plan like that!

It went in ok and nearly everything bolts up ok except for the rear arms.

They have two main bolts that you crank up and the rear camber eccentric bolt to which the sway bar bolts to.

The bolts on the 968 are further apart but I managed to get around this. I used the top bolt hole in the spring plate and the top bolt hole in the arm. This gave me a little bit more of a lower stance (result!) and then I made a plate for the bottom bolt to go thru so that still clamped the spring plate to the arm down there too.

T'is working fine.

Now, got it down on the ground and roled it around to settle it only to find an alarming amount of camber on the rear wheels!

So I got it back up in the air and had a play with the adjusters and ended up setting it all with the least amount possible within the range they work in but still have alot of camber and it loks like they're toeing out.

By alot of camber I mean the tops of the wheels are further in that the bottom.

Any ideas?

Sitting here typing this I think the rear camber eccentrics can casue this if the offset is turned to the front or rear, is this correct?

Ta!

There should be two adjustments. The eccentric that you are talking about and an oval shaped hole in the arm and the spring plate. The one that is in there does the camber adjustment because it changes the relationship between the spring plate and the inner portion of the arm that bolts to the torsion bar housing. The other adjustment does toe the same way. Unfortunately there is a tool that you need to adjust the toe prorerly, but with everything loose you could probably get pretty close. You pobably have alot of camber because you had to make plates for everything to fit, resulting in the arm sitting higher than it is supposed to. You might not be able to bring the wheels into spec with the setup you have. Try loosening everything up again and seeing if you can get any better results. Keep us posted.
