What was your first car?
#21

My first car was a 1967 FIAT 850 Coupe which I bought in 1973 at the age of 18.  It was a great teacher - when I bought it I had never driven a stick and knew only how to put gas in a car - that was it.  When I sold it five years later, I not only knew how to drive a stick but, out of necessity (i.e.: lack of money),  I had learned how to rebuild an engine (all 49 cubic inches), put in a new tranny, and I could replace to engine/tranny mounts on the side of the road in 15 minutes flat (they broke every 5000 miles)!

1937 Willys Overland, with "new" engine from WWII surplus jeep. Really bad brakes, vacuum wipers (quit when going up hill), 30deg steering freeplay (fixed), wood floorboards, but body was impervious to dents. Purchased in '57 to get to college, kept for about 5 years. Replaced with used Hillman Husky (wagon). Family survived both.

my first car was a 1969 Ford Galaxy 500 fastback. That was followed by about 20 VWs. Then some Fords, Nissans and Porsches.

1963 Corvair Spyder - This car a 150 bhp engine with a turbo charger to provide the extra hp. Fun car to drive, cured the handling issues with s front sway bar and transverse leave string that was anchored to the chassis  and attached to the rear swing axels. My only beef was that the car would foul its plugs on a regular bases and had a tendency to overheat when driven hard on a hot day. Replaced it with the 409 Bel Aire which was in turn replaced by a Camero Z-28.

Then I discovered Porsches….

Brand new 65 Cuda.  The Commando 273 ran strong for it's size.  Replaced it with a 67 GTX 440.  Loved both cars, then choices went downhill for some years.

My first car to drive and own at 18 years of age was a 1963 Vauxhall Victor. I bet you guys have never heard of this "beast". I inherited it from my Dad when he passed away in 1967. I can't say too much good about this car, but it took me around for a while. At 70000 miles it was toast, rusted away in the Danish winters.

1952 ford coupe, automatic, flathead V8 (110 hp!), badly faded maroon paint (that rubbed off on your clothes). Later upgraded to a 1950 ford coupe with the V8 swapped into it from the '52 with a 3 on the tree. Eat your hearts out!
