weird gas consumption
#1

I never really paid attention to, nor cared how many miles per gallon I get with this car, but for the last year or so I just happen to notice that my difference between city and highway driving, UNLIKE the commonly published 33% delta is more like 50%, or even greater.. On trips to SoCal, approx 450miles all highway driving ( and if I behave most of the time ) I can generally get there with one tank of gas. However, it seems on weekend drives by the time get even close 200 miles I need to fill it up.. So 10 MPG in city ?! Is something suspect here that I should check out, or is that normal for a chipped car which for some reason does not impact highway mileage all that much, yet it drinks like crazy in city conditions ?

I seem to get 24 on highway and I am not being good. But around town I think I see the same thing. I just don't pay as much attention around town. I it the chip or the driver?

I suppose if you were hitting the rev-limiter pretty consistently for the entire 200 miles you might make 10 mpg. I usually see at least 14 when I am canyon carving. And check your fill up. I think the tank is maybe 18 gallons?

Supposedly our tank is just about 19 gal.. In the city I do not speed but I do keep the rpm above 4k always , then again I do that on the highway also , even when on cruise control, so maybe those stop and go at every traffic light and stop sign are taking their toll more than I thought they would.

Check for small teenagers and a 1/2 hose. They can hide almost anywhere

Ever since Pete and Max installed "more horsepower" my gas mileage has gone way down...but the fun factor is way up

I'm getting less than 20 MPG highway now, but I rarely let off the gas.

lol - that's for sure jay - those of us behind you can smell it

ds968, it might be time to clean some things up - when is the last time your MAF was cleaned? how about plugs changed? - while i'm willing to bet that it's largely your right foot, 10mpg is REALLY low - i've never gotten that low, even on the track

Maf cleaned often, plugs rather fresh, and my heavy foot applies much more to the highway than it does to the city, so it could be some other factor at play, but the 10 mpg is a guess based on just one tank trial, so I,ll give it a couple of additional tests to see if it,s consistent... Problem is I make a habit of never letting the tank get below the half mark, lol, imore often than not i fill it up when it drops just one line from full, so I have to get over that psychological hurdle first :-)

I can confirm that driving in a traffic jam is horrible. 45 minutes and a quarter of the tank has gone...

Normal drive gives me a fun rate of 26 miles to a gallon.

Maybe installing a stop and go system has more effect or even to drive electric with the starter. :-)

The tank is 74litres (16.2 imp galls), this includes an 8litre reserve after the warning light comes on which might get you about 44miles.

Right,16.2 imp gallons should be 18.9 gallons here, so that is what I was basing my guesstimates on, but I never let it go to the warning light. I,ll take some notes after the next fill up follows by all city driving. It seems though that I get pretty good mileage on the freeway - more than 22 mpg- considering the chip, consistent high rpm, frequent triple digits speed runs, albeit brief ones, and since as flash witnessed , at any given time there,s some 50+lbs worth of stuff in that hatchback storage spaces, the extra weight can,t be al that good for mpg efficiency

according to the owner's manual, the tank is 19.55 US gallons, with a reserve of 2.1

That tank plus an average of 28+ miles to the gallon permits me to drive from my home in Alameda to Beverly Hills on a single tank of fuel with some left to spare. But, I'm cruising in 6th gear at 75 which I believe is 3200 rpm and not running with engine speeds north of 4K in a lower gear. So the engine is not wound up tight. I would expect that if I made the same trip, but in 5th gar my fuel consumption would go up.

You no doubt saw the governments announcement of, I believe it was the 2025 average fuel consumption at something in excess of 50 miles per gallon. That means that your new 2025 911 will come with a manu-matic 14 speed gear box. The only reason you see 6,7, and 8 speed gear boxes, especially with automatic transmissions or manu-matics like the PDK and the Tip, is to reduce fuel consumption figures.
