Vortex Generator

I found this product on www.design911.co.uk, this one of the UK's leading Porsche parts supliers. I am just wondering if anyone has heard of it, or even installed it. Is there realy a gain in power.

I'd let someone with engineering knowledge reply with a realistic assessment of how feasible the claims are, but this thing ( or a near-identical product anyway ) has been on the market for a long time here and from what I hear it gets more laughs than orders for it. Not saying you will, but one MIGHT actually lose power with some of these miracle in a can components.

My rule of thumb is that if I don't read something favorable about a miracle gas-saving or performance enhancing product in a mainstream publication like Consumer Reports, Car & Driver, etc., or don't see it on newly manufacturer automobiles, then it's very likely to be balogne.

Yeah, this thing's picture should be placed next to the word "bogus" in the dictionary. It's been tested by numerous outfits (including Mythbusters, I beleive), and has been found to be 100% ineffective. Which applies to 99.999% of all so-called gas svaing devices. The low hanging fruit (electronic fuel injection, microprocessor-controlled engine management, variable valve timing, etc.) has been implemented years ago. Going forward, anything that improves the efficiency of engines is going to get much more difficult, and expensive.

Vortex generators are commonly used in the aviation industry. Depending on how they are used they can increase the lift of an airfoil, or in some cases deliberately reduce lift. They are also used to reduce drag, ie increasing speed of the aircraft. In some applications they are also used to guide the flow of air (over a wing or fuselage) for a specific reason.

I have no doubt that the correct use of vortex generators could quite drastically improve airflow in the intake without any particular downsides. But the research and testing behind a market ready product would be monumental to say the least and absolutely not generic but limited to a specific model.

That being said I think that the product mentioned here is a piece of crap.

Trust me, this thing really works!!

I put one on my Schwinn, and man, I'll tell you I had to hang on to the handle bars........
