Removing CD changer cable...
#1

Hi guys,

Here's one for you:

I just removed my Kenwood CD changer from the trunk of my 968. I have replaced my Kenwood stereo with an Alpine iPod stereo player, and therefore don't need (and can't use) the CD changer that used to be in place. The 13pin cable that connected the Kenwood stereo to the changer is still in place. I'd like to remove it if it's not too much hassle.

So I guess my question is, how easy (or difficult) is it to yank the cable out? I'm not sure what route it takes to connect to the former stereo, but I'm thinking there is a fair bit of 'panel removal' that needs to be done?

Any ideas?

cheers,

Nah. Piece of cake. I just removed my Pioneer CD changer from the boot and pulled the control cable out with little effort. Just remove the black door sill bar, pull up nice and even and it will snap up and off. Pull off the black door trim that goes up the side of the door opening about 1/2 way (to the bottom of the rear passenger window). Carefully peel back the vinyl that lay underneath toward the interior of the car. Remove 2 screws (or so) and their caps and you can pull open the rear quarter panel enough to probably see (flash light or such) the route that wire takes to the trunk well. You should be able to pull it out without much effort.

Hi Dave,

I have a convertible! The whole process seems to be more intricate. I've been at it this morning and discovered that the control cable goes from the dash, all the way under the armrest, then disappears I believe under the seats (and the carpet), and then god only knows how it gets into the trunk!

I can see this taking all day!

Under the arm rest? Man that installer was dedicated! The route down the side is much easier and then just poke it out the boot with a flexible rod and some black tape. If all else fails cut the sucker in half and get out the crimps, at the very leas tthe wire will be colour coded and you can put it back together <img src="/forum/images/smilies/968/smile.gif" class="smilie" alt="" />

Hi guys,

Just a quick note to say that I managed to pull this one out. What a hassle!

Basically the cable ran from the dashboard, under the armrest, through a little slit in the carpet, under the passenger's back seat (still under the carpet), up the side, behind the rear right panel and then through a small hole...into the trunk!

I managed to 'lift' the carpet a little, enough to give me the confidence that I wouldn't have to rip out all the upholstery to remove the cable. I then removed the rear panel and from there on it was a simple case of pulling the cable slowly until it was all out.

cheers,
