Vibration/thump in torque tunnel area under shifter
#41

Quick follow up on Part #944.421.012.19  There is a discussion on Rennlist:  google "968 Torque Tube Dimensions"  This tube is for a Tip, and does not appear to have the split.

i just spoke to sunset (when all else fails, consult the experts).  the number you are showing does not exist in their system.

the part number for the tip is the one i listed.  however, they don't even use that one anymore, as they are all rebuilds, and substitute an EX for the suffix

as for dimensions, i've seen an awful lot of stuff that is in conflict on this one.  like i said, i went round and round on it a couple of years ago.  this guy thought this, and that guy thought that.  nobody seemed to have definitive information, and there was a whole lot of bad info flying around.  i know that they don't swap back and forth, as the rear housing is very different.

Well my interest is basic curiousity as I have a TT without a split (and no part# for it) and then there's the one with the split which I assume is the part # you're citing. I've seen several seemingly authoritative posts that state the 944 automatic and the 968 tip use the same TT.  But I imagine you've heard that before.

yeah - some of the stuff you read on the internet sure "seems" like it comes from authority.  i tend to support the things i put out there with sources.  that's why i called sunset for the definitive answer, and cited the porsche official parts catalog, rather than somebody else's rehashed version.  hard to go wrong when you use the real experts.

Having perviewed the illustrations of both the 968 and the 944 s2 etc. the 968 is uniquely different so I don't know where all this misinformation is coming from. Thanks again for your follow up.

me either, but i've seen an awful lot of that kind of thing.  that's why we created this site.  we carefully screen the stuff put up here when it comes to things like this, so that the next guy gets good info and not bad.

I had the TT rough running above about 2.5K RPM. When TT spins, you get it. When it stops but engine is running you loose it.

I sent my SOLID torque Tube to Constantine at Black Sea and they did a great job with their SUPER BEARINGS. P.S. They are!

The removal and replacement of the TT is a MAJOR job. I had my mechanic do it for a taste over $2K. Getting the TT to GA. and back plus new bearings was a taste over $1K.

The smoothness is unbelievable. Very surprised. As things slowly age, we don't notice incremental changes, but put new bearings on the TT and it's a whole different ball game. A joy to drive, even more so.

If you have this issue, stop driving so as not to damage the surface of the drive axle. You can also damage the clutch/engine area as the shaft flops around, as well as the transaxle if it moves at the other end of the drive axle. Constantine will check the drive axle for run-out and if a problem, they have new units for $400. It's just the solid TT that is hard as he** to find.

Keep them on the road. I am over 300K.

Brian
