Variocam Inspection: Engine is something I can eat off of.
#1

My car turned 60k miles. So, in responsible 968 ownership, I inspected the timing chain, tensioners, and cam sprockets. This is what I found....

Lifters and springs....

Cam shows almost no wear. I'm very happy with my car's P.O.s

Very nice! Do you know what kind of oil the P.O. used, and how often he changed it?

With our cars piling on the mileage, and due for things like variocam inspections and head rebuilds, it will be interesting (and I'm sure a matter of honor for many of us) to see and share the conditions of our engines' internals. You set the bar very high, though. Congratulations.

Looks real good!

You should kiss the PO.

Wow... very impressive....I hope its indicative of the state of the rest of the car, if so, full points to the PO.
I'm at 200 000km and itching to have mine refreshed and then hopefully add 928's SC kit.

The original owner used Reeves Porsche (delivery dealership) in Tampa to do all the maintenance work until about 57k. Rich (uscarrera) put Redline oil in the car. I haven't changed the oil yet because it has only 1000 miles on the change. All I can say is that the rest of the car is as clean as the inside of the engine. I just hope I can be as good of steward to this car as they have. It was a pleasant surprise to see.

Compliments on the photos. Very helpful to those of us less mechanically inclined.

To be honest, mine did not look much worse than that when I checked at 112k... not that anyone should wait that long!

That's great news if it looks that good at 112,000 miles! I'll be proud to display that in about 20 years!

Reviving this thread. Just wondering what folks have been seeing of their variocam pads. My car has fewer miles (about 26K now) but the car is still 17-years old. I read that these things are made of nylon, which should last a really, really long time, and I know that Derek and Ugo told us to check at 60K miles, but I am getting ready for a date with the shop and wonder if there is ANY value in having the pads checked. Anyone recently pulled their pads?

This has been mentioned in other threads on the subject of the pads (do a search), but the lower pad wears the most. It's about impossible to check the bottom one without taking out the variocam unit.

Mine is in the shop now for a leaking front main seal (just replaced about a month ago as it was weeping, and now the new one is actively leaking). One of the things they have been asked to do is inspect the condition of the cams, chain, tensioner and pads, so I'll report back hopefully this week with the results. About 46,000 miles.

Mine also looked practically brand new at 100k miles when I had the head rebuilt, and even though everything including the bottom pad had little more than hairline marks on it, it was relatively inexpensive to replace all the variocam components " while in there " , so I had it done just for peace of mind for the next 100k miles. BTW, the POs used Mobil 1 until 58k miles, I've used Amsoil since then.

That engine is incredibly clean. I've see 100 or more and none have looked that good. Congrats.

I'm suspecting synthetic oil from a very early age. Petro oil browns from heat over time.

Red Line Rocks!!!

I doubt that the material is nylon, never seen it that colour, although since that part may have been cast that shape to save cost then a colour choice by Porsche might come into play. The colour reminds me more of old Bakelite cased radios.

They start out lighter colored than that, and get browner over time.

" Is there more than one supplier? "

Porsche changes OEMs from time to time, so it's very possible yesterday's OE part looks different than today's OE part
