Fake engine noise?!

I've been reading about these things in road tests of new cars for years, and have always thought they're very strange. Sounds like some automotive engineers have a little too much time on their hands...

Must have been a woman engineer that came up with faking engine noises idea..no doubt many male drivers will think it's real .. :-) :-).

Ridiculous. What made them think producing engine sound artificially was a good idea, and worse trying to keep it a secret...

Reminds me of the engineers for Mazda designing the exhaust note of the Miata when it first came out to sound like it had something it didn't. Long story short they did consumer surveys where they tested the engine sounds of everything from a Porsche to an Austin Healy to find out what notes a consumer considers to be "sporty". Then they created engine management software to replicate the notes to appeal to the consumer's ear instead of actually attempting to create a real performance engine mapping.

Then again when the Miata came out, the standard model stock did not include an engine. You actually had to purchase an engine "option" to get a vehicle capable of rolling off the showroom floor. My Father was buying one the first production year because the cost sounded ridiculously low. He loved the way it sounded. Then he discovered he had to purchase an optional engine and walked away from the deal.

Doesn't the 991 pipe engine sounds into the cabin?

Yes, as does the Panamera GTS, but those are actual sounds piped into the cabin. I think it's kind of crazy, but at least they aren't manufacturing the sound because it doesn't exist... You can actually shut the sound amplification off and you're immediately isolated from the outside world. I can see why they pipe in sound.

BTW the Panamera GTS's sounds are outstanding. I drove one while at NJMP last weekend, and we used it to lead the "parade" laps. What a car.

+ 1 to Joel's post. No comparison between piped in real sound and soundtracks played by your car's sound system. Doesn't get much tackier than that ; just a more advanced version of the lighter socket plug-in device which was / is being sold for the same purpose..

i think it's a great idea, though not like you'd think. i can't count the number of times i've been startled in a parking lot by a moving prius that was drowned out by other noise. had it have had an engine sound, i would have been fine.

Some sound OUTSIDE the car, for safety reasons, yes ! Definitely needed for all those Prii ( which I presume is the plural of Prius..) or for Karmas, or Leaves ( again, plural of Leaf :-) ) but when you have your stereo play a Mustang 302 exhaust soundtrack inside your Chevy Volt , that's just wrong. Though you'd certainly impress all your friends in the local Walmart parking lot.

I think the Boss 302's sound outside the Prii ( I like the plural BTW) would be great. I can see the safety benefit for sure, but the sheer hilarity of it would be great! The sound of a muscle car with a 3/4 race cam coming out of that car makes me chuckle just thinking about it.
