Hi,

Why did you replace this, were there any symptons that it was bad and if so what should I look out for? Does the first picture show the check valve?

the picture shows the old on the right and the new one the left, actualy the variocam was doing a rattling sound when engaging, around the 1500 rpm, and since the valve could be a prob i replaced it, although the prob went away the same way it appeared, one day was gone.

Isn't that gear oil thicker than OEM recommendation? IIRC, 75w90.

i m quite happy with it, much better shifting than the swepco, an improvement no doubt. and on the long trips it more stable.,it really quieted down the LSD.

if you guys read on the specs its quite more stable fluid, not to mention that is recomended by BMW for the Z3 AND THE Z8 Gearboxes with LSD.

VEDDER,

I went from Swepco to Redline. Still not happy about gearbox noise. Is the Castrol that you are using OK for a NON-LSD rear? If not what part number? I would like to try Castrol before I go back to Swepco. The Redline did not impress me.

Thanks

Brian

Vedder, What LSD are you running? You find the transaxle to be noisier with the LSD?

Brian, my stock transaxle is not loud at all with Mobil 1 synthetic 75w90. What mods do you have that make your so noisy?

just to clear up, what i mean noisier, was in relation to several trips i do during the year, lets say 1800 miles from London to Lisbon, or 900 miles to north of scotland, the transaxle tends to be a bit more noisier, after several hours. I to used to run Redline 75w-90, it was my first choice, but was not happy at all, then went to Swepco 201, and it was dificult to shift at cold (my 968 is a daily driver), but i could live with it.

Now i changed to this Castrol and i have to say that im quite impress, of course my gearbox is not new,or rebuilt as far as i know, even the tolerances built into our gearboxes are not what they are now days on modern cars.

Im not an expert on oils or such, but from looking at the specs from Mobil1,Motul300v,Castrol,Redline,Royal Purple,Swepco. ithought that the castrol would do just fine.

wheres the link for specs:

Vedder,

The transaxle is in need of a rebuild. It has had the pinion bearing done, but that was a long time ago. The cab sounds fine with the top down, but with the top up and the cubbys in the back removed, the bearing whine is there.
