968 mods for the new owner
#1

I just purchased my 968, and already I am very interested in increasing my bhp. I read on other sites there are promax chips and racer x chips, is either one proven over the other?

-What mods can be done for a relatively low cost to increase hp?

-What is the factory speaker system in this car? Is it 4x6? Has anyone put a better system in their car?

-Are their any companies that make aftermarket products for our car (both external and internal)? ie front valances, sideskirts or grilles?

Thanks for the help!

cheers-

EC

Hi EC,

Welcome.

1. Both chips are well received. I have one and is well worth the expense.

2. stock speakers are either 6 or 10. I replaced the fronts with 5.25 mid base and tweeter. also added subs in the rear wheel wells and amps in the spare wheel well.

3. Try Dave Greiman's website for grills.

There are splitters that looks great on our cars, both fiberglass and PUC.

4. Check the 968.net and the rennlist.org site for additional info.

Luck

i would be happy to send you information on all of the above - i have them all, and many many more - send me an email

the short answers:

i did a shootout dyno test of the chips - i have my choice of what to run so i can have the most power - i run the racer x - as soon as the rain stops, i will be retesting the "new versions" of the promax that no longer throw the Check Engine Light

if you go to the thread "sneak peek" you can see the grilles and front splitter (spoiler)

on the subject of stereos, there were a couple of different combinations installed from the factory - as an audio engineer, i would be happy to talk with you about your options - there are quite a few and this is a very subjective area, and decisions vary a lot depending on budget, and listening habits

EC I recommend the following mods which would be at the top of my list:

Turbo S PU Splitter (Buy the Poly-U, don't waste your money on the Fiberglass version)

M030 Sway Bars

Strut Brace (KLA if you are on a Budget / Dynatech if you have a little extra to spend)

944 Racing Short Shift Kit

Exhaust (I like the sound of the B&B Call at Evo Motorsports in AZ)

That should get you started.

Eric- surprised a chip doesn't make your list. They make a big difference. I think I'd start with that- this coming from a very satisfied Speed6 owner.

In additoin to a chip, an adjustable fuel pressure regulator set a 6 psi above stock really wakes up the lower rev range. Significant drivability improvement and possibly peak numbers too, although we didn't see measurable difference in the dyno test. Throttle response is greately improved.

Oh and I hear this guy makes some great stuff http://www.968engineering.com/

Eric-

Do you know where I might find a picture of the dynatech strut brace? I can't seem to locate a website for them. Any idea on the price?

Thanks!!

AUS968 is a member here his website http://home.earthlink.net/~968/index2.htm

Stunning work!

Entiner the chip had allready been covered so I left it off my list but it would definatley be one of those first mods... that is if the turbo conversion did not make it there first

That's really interesting, Dave. I don't think that's been discussed a whole lot over time (?). Think I'll look into it. Thanks!

It is one of those things I almost forgot about. I installed it over a year ago. A couple of weeks ago I decided to tweak it up 2 psi more and found some more joy out it.

The only down side is that obtaining the gauge that is required to set the pressure is a dealer only item, or you have to cobble together one from fabricated fittings like I did.

Eric-

I hate to make you retype answers to questions that have been posted many times before, is there already a thread I can read about the turbo conversion?

-What kinda bhp gains we talkin about?

-Cost?

-0-60 time?

-Is it a "kit", who makes it?

Thx my man-

There are guys on this board that will have a ton of input on this topic. My car was Supercharged You do loose your AC, so it is not an option for most 968 owners. To Supercharger it will run you about 8-10K installed. Turbo charging will run you double+ ($25K is a starting point) Again there are probably a dozen or so guys that have either paid to have their 968 Supercharged or did it themselves. So if you are serious you should find lots of great info from the guys who have been through it.

There is a great article on a canadian Turbo in the Gallery:

I almost forgot the CS Steering wheel not that it adds HP or keeps your wheels on the ground. This had to to be one of my favorite upgrades. It Looks good and feels even better. The thicker grip makes a huge differnce on the overall driver experience. It would go straight to the top of my list.
