Remove heater core?
#1

Been a lurker and admirer of the collective wisdom here and on .net for some time and so glad I sold the sensible 4WD when my little one was born. She thinks so much more of me now I'm sure now that I drive a sports car.

Does anyone have an opinion as to whether it is possible to pull the heater core without pulling the dash (sprung a big leak at a recent sprint). rdatta posted sometime back saying that once the copper water lines to the core were unclipped that the core just slides of the support. I have it disconnected and can see it slides on that 'shelf' but there's a bunch of plastic shrouding impeding its way.

Can this be unscrewed and pushed away?

Can the core be twisted up and pulled down past it?

Should I stop kidding myself and pull the dash?

Are the genuine cores advertised from various sites (around US$400 -500) the real deal?

Hi Everybody,

I am experiencing problems with the heater core/matrix as well. I am loosing fluid on the passenger side. I am having this problem for 2 years but it only gets messy when you push the car at hot days. When driven piano the car doesn't really loose much if anything at all but it seems to get worse now.

My local mechanic recommended a coolant addition type of solutoin that is supposed to seal leaks permanently. He says it is really great and because he is rallying and very reputable I should beleive him but for some reason it sounds weird to me solving a leak by pooring something into my cooling system ... does anybody here has experience with this ?

Also does anybody have a description of how to replace the heater core/matrix ?

Thanks for your help !

Alex, are you certain you're losing coolant? The fact that you describe the problem as being related to hot days hints that - if this is when the A/C is on - you might be having condensate leakage into the passenger compartment, which is a regrettably relatively common problem.

I can't offer anything re heater core R/R.

Yes I am quite sure because every time I had the problem the level of coolant has dropped and I had to top up. Also the fluid was somewhat oily, greenish and very warm.

I had a similar problem last year. The leak was so tiny my Specialist recommended some 'Radweld' (UK), it did work for a while, but I was uncomfortable using it. It did no damage I hasten to add so may be worth a try, its just I like to have things fixed 'properly'.

Either way, I had to have the matrix replaced anyway because it did start leaking again, getting worse and worse 'til it finally let go. So in my experience at least it only bought me a few months.

Deano, I feel the same - that doesn't seem to be a longterm fix. But if it does no harm it'll buy me some time until I have the car back in Germany.

Thanks for sharing your experience
