talked to a guy yesterday whose car had the most incredible brilliant shine I have ever seen, lookes as if he had about 100 coats of laquer on the damn thing - ( was a 350Z ) he said the car does have a clear coat and that he sprays this product ( Ultima paint guard ) on it every six mos, and not much else..

I might order a small bottle just to test it, but wonder how the heck you keep dust and stuff from not settling into the coat during the drying / cure timeline they suggest -

I bought the whole Ultima system from them. It works pretty well. I have decided I do not like thier "clay bar" system, though. The paint guard is super quick to apply, but almost impossible not to put too much - you have to go back several hours later and wipe of smudges. I am going to go back to more traditional products, I think.

So over application results in smudging? Does the stuff dry in the several hours that you waited? It is difficult to smooth out the smudges? Does this stuff obviate the need to wax? I'd go to some length to eliminate that detailing step.

Well, using the system I bought there is a polish you apply before the paint guard spray with a Porter Cable type random orbital (I think it is the PC one, rebranded). So, that is pretty much like the wax step you are trying to avoid. Te steps are pretty much like this:

- Wash
- Dry
- "Clay Bar" (elastofoam whatever they use), make sure you dry off well
- Polish with orbital, have to keep off your rubber bits and buff off like wax
- Sealant spray, you apply a tiny tiny bit with a sponge, it dries in an hour or two, but I let it cure for several hours and then buff off the streaks with a soft cloth -I always have some. You can apply multiple layers - I usually do at least 2, as it is very quick once you are to this step.

Supposedly the sealant does some molecular bonding or something with the polish. Sounds a little like snake oil, but works okay.

Here is what I bought - they have sales on the kits pretty often and Lynn Philips helped me a few times and he was extremely helpful.

It's pretty tight in the garage and I usually leave the 968 outside usually. But yes, these are two great cars. 993 is a better fun car, but the 968 is more practical.

I have used a "paint sealant" for years followed up by a good Carnauba Wax. Where the sealant lasts months - you'll need to re-apply the "wax" every other month or so.
I haven't used the Ultima brand of sealant but have used & still use Klasse High Gloss Sealant Glaze.
I think you main diff's are the sealants are made in a lab & the "wax" comes from mother nature.... of course the protection they both offer is what I want.
You can't really go wrong taking care of your things... like the paint job. [img]style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.gif[/img]

I just ordered a small (4 oz.) bottle. I plan to try it out when it arrives, weather permitting. The old cab has 140,000 miles on it with a number of small nicks and stone chips. I am not very diligent in my exterior upkeep, so I am curious as to how this stuff works for the "casual" user.

Ok, it has finally stopped raining here, and I had a chance to use the little 4 oz. bottle of Ultima Paint Guard +. The paint on the 968 is just ok, but after washing it and letting it dry, I applied two coats, allowing the obligatory 12 hours between coats. I have to say the it seems to work pretty good on average paint, and the application is just too damn easy. 10 minutes tops, and that's being careful. But where it really "shines", pardon the pun, is on newer, more glossy paint. I put two coats on my Saab Aero and wow! Even my wife, who is not into cars at all, noticed the shine. Her comment was "Your car looks brand new"! I did not experience any streaking, as I used very little (and I mean <i>very</i> little) of it, per the instructions. Of course I had also done the tires and trim with Aerospace 303, so it might not be a completely fair assesment. About the only downside to this is my wife liked it so much she asked me to do her car as well. I went ahead and did a coat on my son's car also. So, with a total of six coats, I have a total of about 50 minutes of "work", if you could call it that, and each car looks very good to great. I don't think I've used an eighth of an ounce, as the bottle is still almost full. Bottom line - If you're looking for the easiest way to "polish" your car and have it look sharp, this is it, hands down.

Great to hear ! My 4 oz bottle arrived a while ago, but with the car in "intensive care" now it'll be at least another two weeks until I can use it.
It'll have a new head, so the spray is the post surgery cosmetic touch up. [img]style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/wink.gif[/img]

Glad it worked for you, Z. Yep, easy is the order of the day for this stuff. Glad you didn't get any streaking, but even if you do, just a quick buff with a good towel gets rid of it. Told ya you don't need much!

I finally had a chance to use this. It sure IS difficult not to overdo it - I followed the instructions and just sprayed a very light mist on the applicator "sponge", but it was still more than it should have been. Man, it seems that tiny bottle can cover Jay Leno's entire fleet !!
I let it cure for 24hrs but the film was still on in few visible streaks even then, so I had to use some elbow grease to wipe it off. A bit of a PITA,
but the finish is worth it. I'm impressed with the result. Mirror finish... not dissimilar from what a pure carnauba paste application looks like.
Will just have to see how long it lasts.

You must have ESP ! I was just about to post this yesterday after a drive in the blistering hot sun ( 101 F ).. which incidentally I hate to do, but the 968 sat for a week and I had to take it out for a run.. anyway, back to the answer : I was admiring how perfectly brilliant the shine was and thinking I'm always going to use this product from now on !

BUT.. the car is always garaged, hardly driven more than 2 days a week ( every weekend, but rarely on week days), never in the rain unless ..it starts when I'm already driving [img]style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/rolleyes.gif[/img] , so there's just not a heck of a lot of elements and frequent exposure to them which would eat away at the finish that quickly..

No matter how many previous posts said this, and no matter how much you try to folow that advice or the application instructions, the first time you do this YOU WILL apply way too much ! [img]style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/dry.gif[/img] But that's ok, let it cure for 12 hrs and then just wipe off any film residue, it'll be perfectly fine. The second time I used it on my other car, I was certain it was not enough because I used no more than one single mist on the applicator sponge for an entire segment of the car ( the hood and nose, or the upper part of one whole side, etc..) and it did not look like anything was going on the car. Remember, if it looks wet when you put it on, you put too much ! It's tricky to get it just right and be able to apply so little because it's simply counter-intuitive, but you'll be amazed at the results when it bonds and cures overnight and you don't even have to wipe it the next day to get that gloss it produces.

I cant wait for my bottle to arrive. Is it necessary to tape off the rubber bits around the windows, door jams etc? Is it a smooth wipe on action or is it more of a rub it in action like Klasse?
