Bulb-replacement (gauges)
#1

So, I just bought my car...

I hopped in, and both bulbs for the gauges were out. I tapped the dash, and the one for the tach/battery/oil came on, so at least I can drive it safely. So that must have just been a loose bulb.

But the one for the gas gauge/speedo is still burned out. How tough is it to replace these bulbs?

Any DIY'ers out there willing to give me a hand with some photos? Tips? Etc.?

It is not too tough, but you do have to do some disassembly. This is not really a DIY, but a short list of tasks to give you an idea of how far you have to dig.

Disconnect Battery

Remove steering wheel

Remove plastic trim around instrument cluster and upper vents

Remove instrument cluster

Replace all 3 bulbs while you are in there. They are cheap.

While removing the steering wheel does make it easier, it is not necessary. You just have to finess the cluster and figure out how to tilt it to get it out.

Since you tapped the cluster and a light came on, make sure you clean the contact points. It's a good idea to do this on all contacts before reassembling including the 3 ribbons. Rubbing them with a simple pencil eraser will do the trick.

One minor caveat....make sure all of the cluster connectors are back on before you do a bulb test. If they're not, you're likely to trip the airbag light which can only be reset at the dealer.
