Pinion Bearing Failure
#1

So... my car has always made the jet engine noise ever since I got it and I never thought anything of it. It may have gotten progressively worse over the years. My question is, is there anything else I should have looked at or replaced while it's apart? It's stock and few/nothing has been replaced in all of its 110k miles.

It looks like I found something to use my tax refund on .

I used to be more active and I'm sorry I haven't been! For a while I had to not drive the 968 due to it's tendency to cost money. I will hopefully be around more and able to do events(if the car is ever in an event ready condition)!

Thanks

have them look at the synchros - other than that, it should be pretty normal wear - just make sure whoever does the job knows how to do it - it isn't just a case of R&R the bearing - they have to know how to set the preload

I'm unfortunately in your same club Stephen...bought the car and has made the jet engine noise the whole time, but never thought of it being anything but a noisy transmission...until recently asking Flash while we were out driving the car...

If you already found a place to do it, or are planning on it I would be interested to hear about it.

Blau- I got mine done by my local mechanic. I trust him with my car. He seems to know everything to check for when repairing things and he's been there working on porsche's for the better part of 20 years now. I wouldn't necessarily recommend him to anyone else. I say that because while I think he does a great job, I wouldn't want to be blamed if he isn't up to spec. He does some local 944's and my car. It cost me 2,000 to get it done. Car feels great. Silence is golden Let me know if you want his name and number. You can give him a thorough interview before you decide. Again... I feel he is satisfactory but I really don't have any way to check his work. When I first took it in to him my previous timing belt(last owner had it done) was done incorrectly. What a world of difference that was. So he can at least do a timing belt. He showed me the pinion bearing. It looks like someone was taking a knife to steel and has scratches on it.
