Trailers

Well, the trailer has worked out quite well. Regrettably, we had the need to test the winch, as my son had the unfortunate luck of spinning his Maserati coming out of turn 9 at Watkins Glen this past Tuesday, hitting the front and rear corners on the driver's side. He was towed back to the pits, and we winched the car into the trailer. Everything worked well, and we figured the damage would be primarily body work. Not so lucky. The car is being totaled, as the repair estimate is in the range of $50k. OUCH!!! What happens next, I don't know yet. However, to the topic of this thread, all trailer mods have worked as we hoped.

It goes without saying that the most important thing is that your son is OK. You didn't mention any injuries so we will breathe a collective sigh.

For $50k he could buy a 968 race car, and one for the old man

Yes, the unstated was that he, and his instructor, walked away completely uninjured. We're now talking about whether or not we should go the route of (one or more) real track cars. For the moment, though, he's recovering from the shock of learning that the Maserati - which he really liked and enjoyed - is beyond repair. I know that a yellow F360 Spider with 6k miles has caught his eye - we'll see. I said to him: "Of course, you wouldn't take that out on the track", to which he answered "How could you not?!?". I guess he's really gotten his father's genes.

The Maserati was sold for salvage value, and my son is picking up his "new" F360 this morning. Ah, to be him.

I'm invited to see it later today - I'll shoot a photo or two.

If he really decides to take it on the track, I'm guessing it should fit in the trailer as easily as the Maserati did.

I forgot to bring the camera, but...it's GORGEOUS!!! 2003 F360 with 6.7k miles, yellow, interior is black leather with yellow stitching. Looks and smells like brand new. Flash, I'm also jealous!

Oh, yes, the "vanity" plate selection is TURN 9.

A coworker of mine has an F360. IMHO, one of the top 5 or so most beautiful Ferrari's ever. I've always like them more than the F430. What a perfect street/track car!

It's certainly looking like it will be a street/track car. He wants to take it to the trailer and make sure it can fit between the "humps" over the trailer wheels (apparently it's nearly 6 inches wider than the Maserati was). One good thing is that the Ferrari is about 700 lbs lighter than the Maserati - meaning we should no longer have any concerns about the total loaded rig weight being over the legal limit before needing a CDL.

Wow, lots of ups and downs in this thread. Hope the new car works out well for your son, and smooth sailing for you and the giant trailer.

I have a much smaller trailer setup. F250 4x4 7.3l powerstroke longbed, and a 24' triple axle enclosed trailer. This is a great setup for 1 car and I have plenty of room. With my fairly stock truck, I towed over 20,000 pounds (including truck) and it worked well. I guess the 7.3s are heavier because mine is 8600lbs bone dry. I would like to get a chip so she can get a bit more umph going up mountain passes.

The first drive I had with the trailer was going great for a while. The combo worked well together, and the triple axle setup towed like a dream. I had just wired in a brake controller and was waiting to get home to mount it. I thought I had it on my seat and had something on top of it to keep it steady. Well, apparently not steady enough. I hit the brakes and the brake controller slid forward off the seat. This made it think it needed more brakes, so it locked up all 6 wheels on the trailer. All of a sudden I have a 24' trailer screeching to a halt behind me with tire smoke everywhere. I cautiously drove home, mounted the brake controller, and never had another problem. Whew, these trailers can be scary when you are first getting used to them (and don't have them setup properly!).

Here's what we looked like last Monday morning, preparing to unload at Watkins Glen. In the future, I'm pretty sure my car will be in first, with the Ferrari in the rear of the trailer.

It may be time for a new thread, but let me continue here for the moment.

It looks like my son wants to take the Ferrari to the track - once. After that, rather than risking it, we're talking about buying a car just for DE usage - basically, a race car. When we were at Watkins Glen, I was chatting with an experienced driver who now buys used Corvette Z06 cars - apparently, they can be gotten pretty inexpensively so an accident isn't quite so painful. We're just starting to look - and I'm open to ideas, suggestions, whatever.

LOL!!!

We need something in which an instructor can sit, as well as something that I can manage to get into and out of without the use of a skyhook.

In the realm of more realistic possibilities, net searches have turned up some interesting Corvettes and a couple of well-prepared M36s. We'll keep looking, though - these cars were on the wrong coast.

Jim-

Just read the most recent posts in this thread - WHOA!!

First, I am very glad that your son is okay! Cars can come and go, but life....

Second, I must express my complete jealousy regarding the F360. LOVE that car! And yellow to boot? Pardon me while I pick myself off the floor....

Third and last, you do realize that we, the collective 968 owners here on the Forums, will have to pick on you if you get a 'vette?! Of course, it will be out of sheer disgust on our part because you will be going faster in your C6 than any of us could go in our '68!!!!

Personally, I'd go with an E36- but that's just me having had an E36 318i. Lotsa support in either camp so you really can't go wrong! Plus you can get a 4-dr E36, if that's even a requirement. I believe '95 E36's are easier to hop up engine-wise due to the change in OBD from '95 to '96, but I am not sure.

Keep us posted!

And don't forget- give me the heads up when you'll be in Newtown. Since I start part time this Monday, I'll have some spare time during the week!!!!
