Torque

Starting to put some things back together and want to make sure:



Cylinder Head: 10 NM / 7 FTLB

Spark Plugs: 25-30 NM / 18-22 FTLB

Intake Manifold: 20 NM / 15 FTLB (This is the one I am really unsure of).

Trottle Body to Intake Manifold: No idea...

if you mean cam cover, than this is correct.

Is the intake manifold one correct?



One last parts store trip and I think I may be able to get everything back together today - hope so as the more time that lapses the more I am starting to look at some of the pieces and am wondering...where does that go again? <img src="/forum/images/smilies/968/blink.gif" class="smilie" alt="" />

I have to change my Vavle cover gasket today and was wondering is there a torque on the bolts i should be torqing them to??

Hey Guys,



Just realized my torque wrench starts at 10 ft lbs but i have a smaller one that does inch ponds. by cking the torque of the bolts it seems they were set around a 100 inch pounds. Does this sound correct??? they seem to loose??? What should i torque them to with inch ponds??

The first couple posts of this thread state that the cam cover (valve cover) should be torqued to 7ftlbs. Assumming this is accurate then...

7 foot lbs X 12 = 84 inch lbs

I am about to put my cam cover back on and I looked up the torque settings to verify 10 NM (7 ft lb). This just doesn't seem like much. When removing them each bolt came off with a CRACK! I tested 10 NM and I can do that with my bare hands and a 1/4" nut driver. Anyone have a "gut" feeling on these values? I already have the high heat RTV ready to line the gasket to insure(?) no leaks but I'd feel better at 15 NM. Maybe there si a big deal with expansion and contraction of these special bolts?

careful, those bolts are stupid-expensive. not sure if Sunset or Paragon sells them for a lot less than dealers, but at the local dealer they're about $ 30 each !

20$ long ones and ~2-3$ short ones as of 4 months ago.

7.7 ft lbs. is correct. DO NOT OVER TORQUE them!

The reason those bolts have such low torque figures is that they have a shoulder that only goes so far and the tension is supplied by the rubber grommets under the cap below the head of the bolt. Over torque only stresses the shoulder and does nothing to add more pressure to the cover.

Nice to see there is a mechanical reason for the torque value, tks Ryan. I don't the mysterious answer like "just because".

I tried to gold plate my bolts but they are not the right kind of metal. I have not tried nickel plating them though, I just polished them and coated them with a good clear-coat. If this wears off with engine temp then I will try nickel plating them as I have all that stuff.

I'll post a picture when done as I repainted the cover and intake with Wurth and polished my fuel rail cover and bolts.

zinc dichromated mine (10$ for all of them). looks great and old ones that I could reuse now match new ones. Yellow gold color with hints of pink and green flouescence. the more shiny and smooth you get the bolt before plating = improved looks afterwards.
