Torque Values
#1

First off, this 968 shop manual is poorly put together - sorry Porsche. You must have had the new guys working on this one. Information is scattered everywhere. Also, they change nomenclature between sections which kind of makes it hard.

Having said that, can someone tell me what are the torque values for the balance shaft housings that bolt to the front of the block? I'm a might confused with the book.Such a simple thing, they could have put the torque values in the parts tables for the exploded diagrams.

Any help would be appreciated.

Okay, settled on 15 Ft/lbs. I think that is correct.

Don't guess, especially that late at night! <img src="/forum/images/smilies/968/wink.png" class="smilie" alt="" />

So I'm not the only one who thinks the manual leaves a lot to be desired in terms of organization and content. I seem to remember not being able to find the torque values for these bolts, either (which is odd, because if there's one thing that's thoroughly covered in the manual, it's bolt torque values), so I relied on on this handy little guide I found awhile back:

I believe the bolts you're referring to are M8's, which means that 15 ft-lbs is about right.

I agree on the poor manuals, BTW.

The Technical Service Manual has a summary of this info in it. It looks like

Yes, that is the manual of which I speak. As an engineer, I do a fair amount of technical writing. The first rule is pick your nomenclature and stick with it. The torque summary in the manual is not always consistent with the text and also lacks graphics. I personally have put the torque values on my PET diagrams that I printed out. What a novel idea!

Totally agree with you. My Mazda manual has torque values on the drawings, sure makes it easier. It's a great application of "point of use".
