I have a whine coming from my timing belt area. The belt is relatively new and I thought it was the pulley on the tensioner arm. however after replacing the pulley the noise still exists and still appears to be coming from the tension arm area. Could my hydraulic tensioner be failing? anyone have any thoughts? there is not much to replace here.

Have you tried to run the car with only the timing belt only?? No power steering,alternater and no balance shaft belt?? Your correct there really is not much else that could be making that noise besides mayby the water pump??

Yeah I did. I think I have two issues going on. I first heard the noise, removed the balance belt, and the noise still existed. I narrowed it to the tension pulley. I replaced everything and a niose still existed. However, I think the lower balance belt tension pulley is going bad. The problem is the noises propagate all over the place.

I noticed by my 968 that the tensioner arm can be moved in the wrong side. When the car become hot the hydraulic tensioner gives a higher load. At that time the pulleys are not correct lined up anymore. After changing the arm and the pin the sound was over when hot.

timing belt might be too tight(gives a whirring whining noise).....but, what exactly have you replaced with new parts? obviously bearings can make this noise,too

My arm has a little bit of play, not much. I replaced the pulley on the tension arm and idler pulley on the timing belt. I think that it is coming from the bottom pulley on the balance belt. thanks for the suggestions
