drove off with the handbrake on..
#1

Hi all

Well - just drove 1500km with the new purchase - once at home, did an oil change, and general sort out. then of course, once i'd got everything done, went off to warm up the engine and evaporate off the water from cleaning up the mess from the filter removal and subsequent degrease...

of course - having worked on the car I had the parking brake on, and drove off with it on....and at about 70kmh I herard a "clunk" and realised that the parking brake weas still on...released it - but the clunk happended before the realisation....

thought there would be no resistance on the parking brake when I got back - expecting the cable to have broken, but seems that the p brake still works...so -did i damage the parking brake system -what should I do, and what's the project from here?....noise sounded as if it came fropm under the handle...

Cheers

what usually happens is the pin that retains the parking brake shoe snaps - when that happens, the shoe finds its way to a spot where it jams up and either makes a horrible racket, or locks the wheel

you need to get in there and make sure that didn't happen, and fix it if it did

+1 on that - Flash is right on (as usual) - get in there before driving again - if that wheel locks up while you are driving, it's not good, to say the least. You are smart to ask questions about this - chances are you have one or more small chunks of metal rolling around inside the hub. A few years ago, and back when I had my '87 944, I had this happen when one of the springs holding the brake shoes in place let go. I was lucky, but the force of the sudden lock up while I was doing about 40mph through a turn really got my attention, wrecked the hub internals, bent the passenger side trailing arm, and really ruined what would have been a perfectly good weekend.

I sourced a replacement from 944 Ecology (hub and trailing arm), but now I would be in touch with RS Barn first. Best of luck.

Hi Guys - thanks for that- I see from previous posts that the handbrake only acts on the rear right wheel?- the workshop manual says remove both wheels - Ill head on into the right rear now, and have a look - presume if i chock front wheels and put gear in neutral then I'll be able to rotate the hub - let me know if there are parking brakes acting on both rears...

Cheers for the help! - also found oil in s-plugs - changed them this morning - think it as prob that they were only 1/2 the prescribed torque......

From replacing rear brakes I remember the parking brake acts on both rear wheels. I think you can see a parking brake cable going into both hubs.

Ok -cheers to all - got the right rear off - all looked ok - no broken springs or parts lying in the bottom - just a bit of dust... - so will delve into the other one later today or tomorrow

Cheers

Hi -

Have now taken both rotors off - and found no loose pieces or bits within - the handbrake shoes look pretty thin however - so will schedule to replace them in due course.

the Handbrake action, however, has gone from 4 clicks on the handle to lock up rear wheels - to about 7-8 clicks - so some slack has appeared within the cable. the cable still operates both rear wheels, so if anyone has any ideas as to how slack has come into the system, or nkow where a shematic diagram is viewable online for the handbrake syatem, then please reply to the post!

many thanks

Sounds like you got off light! I surmise that the cable took the brunt of the error and saved your bacon by stretching instead of allowing something to break and bind.

BTW is "saving your bacon" something only Canadians say? It sounds so right when I say it <img src="/forum/images/smilies/968/laugh.gif" class="smilie" alt="" />

Americans say that alot as well, we also say "Bringing Home The Bacon". I love Canada, my wife and I vacation there every summer in Quebec (family cottage). I would like to someday vacation in BC.

inspect the cable and connections - that "pop" you heard might have been it slipping, or even a strand or more breaking
