Throttle body blew its top
#1

Did a little run to the redline on the interstate today. Coming up to the end of the off ramp the engine died. Car would not idle. It just died unless I was on the throttle. Limped home, opened the hood and saw that the cap I'd put over the center port in top of the throttle body had popped off under boost. I'd used safety wire to hold on the cap although the SC instructions say to use a hose clamp.

Flash had warned me about not using the hose clamp. He was right.

lol - yup

each and every step of the instructions is there for a reason. you can assume that i have already run into every possible problem you could possibly see, and i have tried to come up with solutions to them all. i know that some people like to do things their own way, but sometimes you just have to trust the designer.

any fuel safe rubber cap will do, just use the hose clamp this time.

Long time owner, just recently started to learn things... So, you completely by pass the throttle body with the cooling system? Why is that? Help me understand why you would do this? BTW: when I first got my 968 in 2004, the throttle body was leaking antifreeze down on the alternator. Throttle body rebuild and labor was $$$, but fixed the problem.

no. he did that. i have too. it is not necessary to bypass the coolant lines. he and i happen to live in climates where we do not need the pre-heating that the coolant line provides. that is just there to prevent icing in cold weather, and to maintain emissions. in warm climates it is not needed.

you do cap off the center port though, as that gets moved in the kit.

The "cooling" circuit is only there to warm up the throttle body to keep it from icing in cold climates. So if your in a warmer climate its not necessary and only serves to warm your throttle body and thus the air going thru it.

Assuming there is boost on that port, you may also want to retighten (don't over-tighten) the clamp when it is hot, just to get good hot condition clamping. Some polymer caps will become enough softer when engine temp hot, and you could loose some of the clamp force. May not be needed, but a little bit of extra insurance.

there is boost there. that's why you need a clamp. these caps are supposed to be rubber, according to the listing.
