This is all Wheely Complicated
#1

Time to consider new wheels - doing the research now and looking at all the spreadsheets and what-not. [Image: rolleyes.gif]

With the appropriate permission(s), I'd like to host the various spreadsheet(s) on Google Docs and post the link here just for 968forums members? I already host documents for other forums I am a member of, and only forum members get the link and access to the documents. I am considering adding tabs to it for wheels we know fit the 968 so that the same research does not have to be done over and over as well - and I could add the "wheels that came on our cars" info as well, it would certainly be easier than searching and trolling the threads for pearls of wisdom, and it would be editable by all members as well which helps tremendously in getting community wisdom into one specific page (again as opposed to multiple threads/pages etc.)

I'm also collecting sites that can be used to visualize wheels on your car, and I particularly like one called show-alloy-wheels.com, which lets you upload a picture of your own car and show some wheels on it, albeit not all styles and probably not as many as tirerack.com or other sites, but you get to see them on your own car which is nice, and it seems to be pretty accurate as far as scaling the wheel and tire sizes because you actually place red circles over your car photo to show the position and size of your existing wheels. I believe more styles are being added. I'm not so sure about the visual accuracy of some of the sites I've seen. [Image: dry.gif]

So now I have to make the difficult choice of which wheels to go with stylistically, then choose a diameter, then choose a width front and back, then figure out if they're too heavy and if there's a hollow-spoke version, then calculate the offsets and whether spacers are required or not, then figure out if the spacers will require lug changes or not, then choose a tire for sidewall height and ride comfort, then install them and find out I don't like the style as much as I thought I would, then... I went through this last year and have made my decision. I love the Veloce 3.6 but the weight!

In case you haven't hit this site http://www.forgestar.com/v2/wheelsf14.php

Good value, offset and they are incredibly light - 17.5 lbs.

Just had to pony up for a full engine refresh and exhaust in readyment for the SC next week! Wheels are chosen but on the back burner until 2012+ funding. I think LSD or coil-overs is probably more important than shedding 25 lbs unsprung weight. Off to the Lotto store

I started with a 5 year upgrade plan in 2005 and now have a 5 year Maintenance plan....I calculate $2,000/year for maintenance and about another $1,000 for mods and upgrades (including the accrual for new paint/top/interior). So far, my spending is a head of projected..

Sheesh, can't get away from accounting for one minute...

My guesstimate based on my last two P-cars is $5,000 per year in maintenance, and I'll consider myself lucky if I do better than that. The 944S cost about $15,000 over three years. Only this time, I will *not* be adding a "cost" column to the spreadsheet. It messes with my ability to enjoy the car.

Somehow this thread got "derailed".

On topic: I look forward to seeing a good layout for Wheel (and Tire) info.

Adding to the "derailment" of this thread... I told my wife that ~$1000 would cover the maintenance cost per year. Having just spent $4000 +, I guess I am three years "in the hole"!

Don't tell her though... since only $1700 will show up on the next credit card statement... A "guy's gotta do what a guy's gotta do"

It helps to have a son that owes you some "cash"

Boy reading all these estimates of yearly costs is downright depressing! What ever happened to just having fun? Anyone who buys an almost 20 year old car should have factored this financial pain in their decision making process . Now the goodie mods might be a different thing!!

It might help if we distinguish between "maintenance" and modifications. My "maintenance" bill has been relatively easy (belts, servicing, clutch). My modifications bill has been astronomical - but this is most of the fun. It is a bit like a woman going shopping, in that there is the quest for knowledge and sorting out of the options, the prioritisation of things to do and finally the sampling of the finished product.

Given we are not allowed to have guns over here, it is about the closest I can come to hunting.

In the end, we have something unique and personalised. Remember that only 11,000 968's were ever made. This is less than roughly one year of Boxster production. Over here in Australia, there were only 118 imported. So they are much rarer than even a 944 Turbo as a unique model within the 944 range.

I would like a 911 GT3 4.0 in the garage, but I would probably be scared of driving and putting kilometres on it. No such reservations with the 968 - drive it like it was stolen!

If you want a garage queen - buy something else.

The other benefit is depreciation - I have probably had none (the costs of mods has more than offset this). Compare a new 911 GT3 (997 series one), which is now 4 years old, sold for $300k (yes you are reading this right - even though the AUd is now worth $1.08 USD) and can be bought for $150k now. Some of these have around 4,000km on them. That is $150k in three to four years. The depreciation per year is almost as much as my car. I think of this a smile.

DaveN,

Do you know how much the wheels are (in 18" sizes)?

Thanks,

>> It might help if we distinguish between "maintenance" and modifications.

LOL... if it needed to be replaced it was maintenance. If you happened to replace it with a higher-quality part, that's just being thorough.

>> Do you know how much the wheels are (in 18" sizes)?

From the "store" link below, F14s appear to list for ~$1700 in 20" size. Its not entirely clear, but I'm assuming that's for a set of 4...
