The Good Movie thread
#61

The Argentinian movie that won Oscar as last year's best foreign film "Something in Their Eyes". It is very intense. For oldies, how about "MASH".

So far no one has mentioned "Grand Prix" (1966), with James Garner, its one of my favorite racing movies. One of the best of all time IMO.

edit: Its brilliant in HD!

one of my fav 80s flicks:

"<b>No Man's Lan</b>d" with a young coked-out Charlie Sheen.

All the G-series platform Porsches had the still-chic "low and wide" stance.

Fav line:

pointing to a Ferrari: "how about that one!?!"

Sheen: ".....euro trash...... besides, I only steal Porsches"

the cars, clothes, gold Cartier watches, mall scenes and big-hair! all take me back

finally saw inception - i gave it the best shot - i had it up on the 134" screen in full 1080 HD, and with the full 7 point surround going, complete with the 4 12" woofers booming the whole time

as anticipated, dicaprio was at best mediocre, but at least he wasn't cast in something totally unrealistic this time

the plot line was interesting enough, and the theme was an old time tested one, but the film was horribly long at the beginning, and then jumped too quickly and was choppy once the story got going - it's as if the editor and director were really taking their time with the "mary shelley" approach up to a point, and then ran out of time and money, and had to cut the film short

i did like some of the camera work though - the typical off speed and out of proportion CGI i could do without, but that is a necessary evil these days it seems

WOW1 Your a tough one to please. You seem to be overlooking what made this movie great, or perhaps you just don't feel that way. I was most pleased with the plot. This was in no way a typical movie. Every movie bases it story around the good guy bad guy plot. And every step of the way they are predictable. This movie was more then dream sharing, even though that is interesting enough, the real story is what happen to Cobb and his wife Mal previously. I like the pace. In the beginning, it has that WOW factor as worlds are being created and secrets are being stolen from peoples minds. But as it goes along you find yourself drawn to figuring out what was really happening. They start to change things but it's done on purpose. As the movie tells you. There clueing you in that things shouldn't be taken at face value.

SPOILER- but if you haven't seen it by now read on.

i.e.
  • The totem rule was never to let anyone else touch your totem. But Cobbs Totem wasn't his, so was it really working at all?
  • In explaining what happen to his wife, he simply said she hid something away and shows the totem. But doesn't really explain it, just that she couldn't accept leaving "limbo". Now you start to question, is Cobb dreaming or awake.
  • He only has 2 memories of his children. How is that possible. Are they real?
On my 2nd viewing I watched it assuming he was dreaming. it all fit. The building getting narrower and closing in on him. The scene jumping, as explained, dreams don't really have a beginning, you jump right into it. Each member of his team was a part of his subconscious. And the biggest hint of all, the subconscious never attacks the dreamer. In the beginning the 2nd layer was saitos dream and the 1st was the architects dream. Yet the mob attacked the architect. The projections never all collectively attack Cobb.

But in the end, what made the movie great is that Nolan performed an act of Inception on the audience. He planted an idea deep in our minds and let it take root. He then left you to figure it out or go mad trying. Which is why I love that movie. It wasn't another typical dumb down Hollywood movie. He laid out the theory, gave adequate clues, told a great story then left it for you to decide what you just saw. Few directors can or even try to pull that off. The movie had a book like feel to it.

As I understand it, the new Coen Brothers "True Grit" is closer to the book and unlike the John Wayne version.

most people disagree, but i think Dicaprio's best movie to date was Blood Diamond. I think he filled the role better then any one else could have.

i would say though, based on the television shows that succeed, that most people don't know what good acting is, and will go along with whatever the ad campaign tells them to think

i just don't see dicaprio as a leading man - he's a scrawny whiny punk - i see him as the pain in the ass wannabe that gets bumped off in a gangster movie

he need to get his ass to a gym, and lose the goop in his hair

as for true grit, this film may be closer to the book, but still, you don't remake classics - it's like sacrilege

hey - let's do ben hur or gone with the wind with full CGI and 3D - yeah yeah - that's it - that's the ticket

sad

Aw Flash, you just hate Leo cuz he still has (most) all of his hair. But you're right. In some of his roles, he's just too 'Leonardo DiCaprio' to disappear into the character. Same with Tom Cruise, tho he did do a fantastic job in 'Magnolia'.

If you guys want to seriously 'pop the hood' and see what might (or might not, depending on how far your brain can stretch) be lurking just below the surface of some of the best movies of all time, check out Rob Ager's amazing film interpretation page here:

His Kubrick deconstructions in particular are sometimes kinda out there, but also fascinating to consider.

i completely agree about cruise - however, i find that i tend to like some of his movies in SPITE of him, as there is usually a good supporting cast

Personally, I thought DiCaprio was nothing short of outstanding in the scene at the end of Titanic where Kate Winslet lets go of his hand and he sinks into the freezing murky depths. Typecasting at its finest! lol

Did anyone see Pans Labyrinth? I enjoyed that movie quite a bit.

If you want to see a good movie that will make you think, watch "Stay" with Ewan McGregor and Ryan Gosling
