Good Project Car?
#1

Thinking about a 944 or 914 light project car for my 13.5-year old son. He loves the 968. I have tried to join a 914 forum but am having a lot of problems getting on. Anyone here know the top 3 killer things to look for in a 914? Not trying to hijack the forum for an inferior breed, but I figured with so many good brains out there, while I await the admin of the 914 forum...

Thanks

Joe,

Don't forget to check on thesamba, tend to be lots of project oriented 914s here: Six 914s within 100 miles of us

Here is a V6 conversion for $1750 that needs finishing: Blue one

Course craigslist has them also sometimes.

Other thing is Excellence has been running a 914 series of articles focused on a 914 project in the last couple of years. So getting those back issues would be a great way to find out some insight on them.

Personally I think the 914 would be a better investment, they are likely to continue to go up in value. 944s are a dime a dozen around here, many in half-baked condition in the $2000-$4000 range. But I think that putting money into one will quickly exceed the value of the car, and these are very unlikely to increase in value.

Give Tim a call at Comeau Racing Enterprises. He is moving locations and selling a bunch of 944s in half completed condition, down in mission valley. From the email I got from him: "I have about 8 chassis to move or sell."

The 914 has a much greater upside potential.

On the other hand, a 914 is a bigger project -- and costs more. A decent fixer might start at $4000 and parts are also pricey. Also, you can share lots of tools and parts with him since you already have a 968.

Or just jump right into a 968 for him. By the time you add up a 944/914 with "project stuff" parts, tools, works, etc. might get into this price range anyway.

This looks like a steal: only $8K for a coupe 117K miles, looks like it will sell this weekend. ebay 1995 Porsche 968 appears to be from some type of knowledgeable collector. Coupe with a TIP, best combination anyway His note says 3 people are coming to buy this weekend, I wonder if it doesn't get bid up from this price.

That does look like a nice car. Problem is that he is young and energetic so in 2 years his 968 would kick the old man's in the butt. That's bound to happen, but he's going to have to figure out a way to pay for the privelage

One additional thought. Miata. Some very loyal porsche guys on this forum have recommended the Miata pretty highly. Quick search turned up lots and lots of examples, some with very low mileage. Looks like you can get a pretty nice one for about $5K. That won't get you much of either a 944 or a 914. Thoughts?

Grabbed this pic as it reminded me of a local Porsche. If Bob drove a Miata...

lol - don't think i didn't think of that years ago - i love that car - it was going to take quite a bit though to get what i wanted out of it, and in the end, i would still have a miata

This 914 showed up on the St. Louis craigslist today. Ad doesn't say much but if the motor and tranny really are good like it says, $400 obo sounds good for a parts car.

Although your son might like this one better that also just should up today, haha.

Joe,

If you are going outside of Porsche, you might want to consider an MG or Triumph. These are really simple cars, and he could learn the basics before getting into things more complicated. Many are smog exempt, so don't have to mess with that problem. Besides, they would qualify are true sports cars

love the 550 - the power ratings on that 2100 are a bit high, and the weight of the car a bit low, but not too far off (more like 1400lbs and 150hp) - that would be a fun car for sure though - i've been looking at a beck for a long time - outstanding quality - the only 550 replica to be approved for concourse as a porsche

you can get a turn key new one, complete with a 12 month warranty, for as little as $30k

really the only thing stopping me is dealing with a bug motor again - after 10 years of sandrails, i'm just not sure i want to go there - also, unlike "real" cars, the resale value is zip, so if i get tired of it, it's going to cost me money

then too there is the whole "AC" dilemma here in socal - that's what keeps pushing me back to an MGB, now that they have a good system for that car

one project at a time though - i have to restore the TR-4 and build the track car first, so i'm a good year, maybe two, away from another sports car

AutoAtlanta might be a good place to start you want to go with a 914. They are pretty well known.

I've had a dozen or so 914's, one 944 track car and one 968. I'd go with the 944 for initial coast and lack of rust!

My last 914 (aluminum V8)
