The Good Movie thread
#21

I'm impressed that you guys can even think up a list... I know that if I started a list it would never end... but so far, I have to agree with your choices.. it shows common mind set and I like to think the mind set is one that is of intelligence also, if we had to start a favourite bands/albums we would end up with a common pool as well. I think the statistitions can have a good run with this...

I will adopt everybody else list and add these
Sin City
Dark City
Berlin
The Fountain

And any other obscure movie or big 'house shaking ' movies.

Hey Flash, you may like Francis Coppola's new one Tetro. Not his usual, but distinctively Coppola.

I recommend "The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo". It is one of the best movies I've seen in a long time. It's in Swedish with English subtitles. The movie is based on a book by Stig Larsson. There is now a movie of his second novel "The Girl who played with Fire". Not as good as the first but very riveting. And it's not the Stig from Top Gear.

"What's the most you ever lost in a coin toss"

YES YES YES. That scene was so F#@ing intense! No shooting, no karate chopping not even a raised voice. Yet it had me holding my breath and on the edge of my seat till he walked out.

An Outstanding performance

"Do you know the date on this coin, 1958. Its been traveling all these years to get at this point and now its here. And you have to call it."

Everything by John Hughes, no one does comedy quite like him. One of my favorite director/writters

The Thomas Crown Affair with Pierce Brosnan & Rene Russo

Based on your taste, specifically in Memento and Inception, I would suggest Donny Darko. It's a great sci-fi movie that deals with time travel. I would avoid the director's cut...it takes some of the mystery and fun out of the movie.

And you can never go wrong with The Big Lebowski.

Based on the above recommendations for "Memento", I rented it last week (Netflix). I had never heard of it, but a few people mentioned the movie. It was really fun, had to pay close attention, drama and mystery, clues that have to be followed, great stuff. One of those I will probably watch a 2nd time to "get it". Thanks, it was very good.

Now were getting somewhere. Thanks TCSTA

Roland -
yes see it twice and maybe a 3rd time to have it all soak in. Do the same with Inception.

Inception -- see it, really good. (see it in your favorite theatre right now).

It was our anniversary, dinner and a movie. Gotta love those 968s. The valet gave us pole position parking among the Turbo 911s, high end Mercedes, etc. I don't think the valets know that it is a 17 year old car, but I love the way 968s look current, and special, and in some ways very new.

flash -

you sound grumpy tonight - IMHO Decaprio is no Olivier, nevertheless a good footsoldier and gets the job done without ticking you off. What did you see that was so terrible?

responding in general -

You guys have mentioned some of my favorite movies - feels like good company!

Let's leave North America for a moment - here's a few you might enjoy and may not of heard of - top of my head:

Brothers - 2005 by Susanne Bier - there was an American remake but see the original. It will tear you up (in both the ripping and crying sense of the word).
As it is in Heaven - 2001 - just saw this surprising movie last weekend and don't know how I missed it. OK some might criticize it as heartwarming and predictable but in my house we were enchanted.
Animation fans: anything by Miazaki, but start with "Spirited Away." Try "Grave of the Fireflies", by another director in the Ghibli studio - it will change how you think of anime.

lol - not grumpy at all - just really don't get him - i find his performances flat, insincere, and wimpy - i just i don't believe him in his roles - i just don't see him as a leading man - more the geeky sidekick
