Flash's SC setup - bigger better faster stronger

the last part is now done. i'm going down in a few minutes to install it, and then write some files in advance of wednesday's dyno session. i should get a chance tomorrow to take a little drive and see how the new part worked, but i think it should resolve a problem fairly nicely.

either way, whatever i end up with wednesday is what i'm going to run.

lol - you would be guessing and presuming wrong, as the answer is "nope" to both

lol - yeah - not going there at this time.

i can say that i have found that the engine is incredibly sensitive to the size shape and profiles of the components in front of the head unit. how the air gets into the supercharger has been shown to make as much as a 30hp difference. how it gets out of the engine has been almost as sensitive. it has taken a lot of testing and trying different things to get where i got. it was not as simple as "add more boost". there was actually a ceiling on that.

well, the saga continues. it turns out the problem was not the blow off return pipe. the problem is the shape and contour of the elbow itself. the prototype is slightly different than the production model. this was not intentional. i had no idea they were any different when i ordered them. they were the same diameter.

it is amazing just how sensitive this is to very small changes in size and shape of things in front of the supercharger. what these things do the MAF, and how they affect boost, is incredible. figuring it out is expensive and time consuming.

anyway, i now know what the problem is, and am able to recreate it. the only question now is if i can do anything about it.

i had another part made yesterday that might deal with it. initial test last night looks encouraging. a drive today will tell.

i cancelled my dyno time yesterday while i figured all of this out. i am rescheduled for tuesday morning. this will either work, or i will run the production model, tune it as well as i can, and live with what i get.

well, that was a complete fail. all sorts of wonky things started happening.

so, i am going to use the production elbow and tune for the best i can, and that's going to be it.

yeah - now that i know what's going on, it all makes sense. there are limitations to what i can do in this configuration. no worries. it's still more than the rest of the car can handle. anything else was purely for ego.

got back to the dyno today. pretty happy overall. i did have to give up some power to keep things safe, but i have more than i set out to get, and definitely more than i can use and keep my license. basically i added about 40hp at peak to the stage 3 setup, and added some headroom, but the torque stayed pretty much the same.

i know i could get more out of it, but it would require reworking a lot, adding an intercooler, spinning the supercharger faster, and even larger injectors. it would be a lot of work that would likely end up breaking a lot of stuff elsewhere in the car, and i am sure it would not run well down low or pass emissions.

i did most of the part throttle tweaking today. i'll finish it up tomorrow. then i can finally, after 9 years, put the wood floor board back in my car.

then, it's off to smog.

Good luck with the smog. Last time I had to pass in Ohio, I tried everything and couldn't get my S/Cd PGT tuned to pass. Later I found out that the cat was about 1/2 gone, thus my problem. Anyway, fortunately in Ohio, you could get a temporary pass if you brought in receipts for emission related repairs of $200 or more. I got a new cat installed, and purchased an extra O2, and was thus good to go until next time I needed to pass. I was quite surprised with this loophole. But, at least it made some sense. If you kept throwing $'s at it each year, theroetically the polutants should go down.

pretty sure it won't be a problem. remember, the base kit is CARB approved. stage 3 passes with flying colors. no reason mine won't. it's all in the tuning.

Out of curiosity, do they do tests on a dyno in Calif. I know Calif has had some of the toughest emission regs, but I'm totally unfamiliar with the requirements. Imagine you had to jump throught some hoops to get the kit CARB cert. In Ohio they run the car through a simulated course with stop/starts, accel/decel, etc with fairly narrow speed bands that the tech has to keep the car within throughout the test, or the test has to be rerun. Don't know if Ohio still does it that way, but when they initiated that twist it caused a lot more problems for factory stock cars. Even sensors a little out of spec would cause issues even when they weren't bad enough to throw a code.

yes, they use a dyno.

yes, huge hoops. big duckets too. the certification test is similar to what you describe, with the addition of capturing the exhaust in a bag, running only their fuel, and having to do it dead cold.

passed cleaner than stock.

MB, you are reading the wrong thread...try reading through the entire section on "Heavy Breathing"...you can find out all about the development, planning and execution of Stages 1, 2 and 3 and all of the mini-steps in between...it is quite extensive and will avoid re-hashing of topics that have been well discussed.
