Sunroof is inoperable
#41

just a note - driving with the sunroof off creates a huge wind drag, and upsets the airflow over the car, reducing downforce.  not a good idea for a track car.

I doubt that's a factor with the windows down

oh yeah it is.  in fact, with the windows down, it's even worse.  windows down, and sunroof open, i'd guess you have added about 20% more wind resistance.  i would be very surprised if the car would go over 140 like that, no matter what you have done to it.  i know that in the cab, when it was stock, the top speed dropped from 150 with the top up, to under 140 with the top down, and that was a convertible, with no big wind catcher glass bubble in the back.

as i said, a more dangerous problem though would be rear downforce loss.  you'll lose at least 50lbs of rear downforce.  that's huge.

you want the air on top of the car, not in it or under it, or through it.  close up every opening.  tape up every body panel gap.  seal up and smooth out every gasket.  remove every little thing that can catch air.  you would be amazed at how little things affect your speed.  even wider tires, that have no body parts in front of them to direct the air around them, create more wind drag.

Although my speedometer is somewhat inaccurate because of the larger tires I'm running, I was able to show 140 on the gauge at both back stretches at Pocono and WGI. These were not long stretches at this speed for sure because of oncoming corners. At DE events you must run with your windows down, safety, and roof closed. A small number of cars run with the top down but they have the appropriate roll bars.

on these cars, an indicated 140 is really about 131. it really starts being off when you get up that high.  there was an article that came out in autocar that showed the real speeds versus the readings on the gauge.  i've since checked it on a couple of cars and got similar results.

for reference, the top speed of a stock car in perfect condition is 152.  your gauge will read about 165.  bolt on mods will not make much of a difference.  a supercharger will add about 15mph, where you then run into the rev limiter.  mine goes a bit faster, but largely because of the increased redline.

as for the windows, here, they want your windows up for safety.  to have them down, you have to have arm restraints and/or nets, and a full face helmet (not open face).  roof must be closed.

we are now WAAAAAAY off topic

yes - thank you

with as frequently as they fail, it is almost as if porsche begrudgingly installed sunroofs and convertible tops, and specifically designed something that would fail and leave the car with the roof intact.

from what i gather, the sunroof mechanism depends on microswitches and gear travel to determine it's up and down positions.  if a gear tooth is buggered, or a microswitch is not right, then it doesn't reach its limits and lock in position.

I have read all of the posts about sunroofs. Mine is not working and I was falling the procedure in Clark's Garage. I did not have the voltage i should have in the connector to the switch. The switch at the center of the front of the rook clicks as it is supposed to. So it looked as though the relay would be the culprit. But according to Clark's, the relay is in a different place than is mine and the and the labels of the posts are also different than the one in Clark's. SO I could not follow the procedure in Clark's. Does anyone have the correct information as to what receptacles in the relay box would be the correct ones? I popped the cover on the relay and it looks absolutely perfect. I could see no cracks or anything wrong in anyway.

So I really need to know at what I am looking, if anyone could help me with this. Thank you for any thoughts you may have.

I checked all of the terminals that go to the switch. Not one has power. SO i think it must be the relay. But I have no info about the relay. And I have always kept my car out side under a severe weather cover that has always worked very well. I paid for not having a garage the other day. We had wind driven hail and my hood has at least 60 little dimples in it.
