Sub-Zero Reading on Water Temp Gauge
#1

About 18 months ago my voltmeter died, it indicated 18 volts whenever the key is on. I got used to it, but I was keeping an eye out for a fix. A very low mileage cluster from a '95 became available and I bought it. Installed my speedo/odometer in the new cluster and installed the new gauge cluster into my housing and lens (the one with the good instrument lights). While I was at it, I ditched the airbag steering wheel and installed the AJUSA 930 wheel When the big moment arrives I turn on the key and check the horn, it works! I fire up the engine. The voltmeter works! Along with the oil pressure, speedo, and odo plus (an added benefit) the master caution and air bag lights. Unfortunately, the water temp gauge is pointing straight down. Its unnatural looking.

I will probably fix the air bag light by removing the complete system before taking a hammer to it and resetting the computer..

I'd like your suggestions for fixing the water temp gauge. Is it possible to move the gauge from the original cluster to the new one?

Usually when gauges go fullscale right away, they are missing one leg of their signal. Double check all the electrical connections before assuming it is a faulty gauge.

Dave,

As it turns out, both the problem and the solution were much simpler than I feared. While waiting on ideas from the board, I removed the cluster and removed the gauge assembly from the lens/housing. It was obvious that I had damaged the needle and rotated it about 45 degrees counterclockwise. I have no idea how I did this. Examining the back of the gauge assembly I found that there are two threaded studs projecting through diamond shaped insulators. By removing the nuts and gently prying the insulators away from the flex printed circuit I was able to release the temp/fuel gauge assembly. So I just traded temp/fuel gauge assemblies with my "spare parts" cluster. Everything is back together, in the car, and operating normally now.

Except for the air bag light <img src="/forum/images/smilies/968/mad.gif" class="smilie" alt="" /> . I actually soldered the leads from my 3 ohm resistor into the male connector pins to ensure I had a good connection with the female connector on the air bag firing circuit harness.
