Stripping the interior
#1

I am preparing to endeavor on an interior-stripping expedition to set-up for a cage installation. Everything but the dash (and possibly door panels - for now) will go. Most of it is pretty simple as long as I have a chiropractor lined up (Mark... get ready for the calls). But... the glue and the rest of the nasty sticky stuff the factory uses to attach the insulation and other components is supposed to be a royal pain in the #$* to remove.

Any advice on products, solvents, tools, etc? I want to protect the factory paint as much as possible as it will be exposed and I am not planning to re-spray the entire interior once the cage is in place... just touch-up the weld points. And for touch-up, can one get factory paint colors or formulas from Porsche for our cars? Can I buy a couple of cans of 1995 Grand Prix White?

Thanks in advance...

i don't know if they make it in cans, but you can buy a pint of it pretty cheap, and then put it in an air brush

somebody here mentioned something that cleaned the glue off pretty well - not sure what it did to the paint - do a search here

quite the project though - good luck and have fun

Pablo,

Pay particular attention to Darryl's suggestion...

Maybe a "Carpet Removal Party" (I work for pizza and beer)

i'm getting pretty close to thinking about this as a winter project myself - really contemplating lightening things up - i think i can lose about 50 lbs between the glue, insulation, and door panels (i'd switch to a lighter material), even after installing the new leather door panels and better sound dampening products

LOL Jay.... Unfortunately rumor in the street has it that the PA and adjacent vicinity's 968 clan members can consume obscene amounts of beer in record short times. An occurrence that is yet to be explained by common scientific theory. But I can certainly rent a truck, get a few kegs to be parked out in front, and give it a go!

I appreciate the input and look forward to the weight savings. It does sound much more difficult than what I anticipated. I may resort to getting some "LaborReady" labor to help, or have one of the local detail shops price the sticky removal for me. Reading everyone's comments and the previous thread, it may take longer than I anticipated, so I may be showing up at NNJR's Porscherama at Pocono on Sept 14-16 with no interior, no cage, and a bunch of uncleaned gunk!

Aghrrrrr... the infamous slippery slope... I should have listened... <img src="/forum/images/smilies/968/blink.gif" class="smilie" alt="" />

I think you'll find not everything under the carpet is painted, some areas are just primer grey. I painted my interior "krylon" white just for ease of touch up. It will get thrashed. There is an amazing amount of crud that comes thru the open windows. Search for posts by Graham as he went thru the stripping process.

Thank you guys... I truly appreciate all the input. I may start the project this weekend. I checked that paintscratch.com and it appears to be a solution for spraying after cage is done.
