Strange shift!

I made my usual u-turn 1/4 mile before the turn-in to my office. Full exceleration in first, I yanked on the shifter for second and the clutch did'nt engage, it just reved. Then the shifter was stuck in second, I had to wrestle with it to get it back into neutral. Then it ran fine, what the hell happened? Do I have a linkage issue now?

let me get this straight - pedal engagement seemed to have no effect?



if that is the case, it sounds like the beginnings of hydraulic failure

Well, when my clutch hydraulics failed it just stayed engaged and woud not disengage. I drove to the shop without using the clutch. This sounds more like gear sleection problem inside the transmission. I had a similar problem (stuck in second gear) with my 1987 924S and had to drive it 60 miles home from Santa Fe in second gear. Turned out to be a bent shifter fork inside the transmission. I ended up replacing the shifter fork, some synchros as well as bearings and seals. Good luck, Bob Blackwell.

there are a few different symptoms of hydraulic failure, depending on which component is failing - the high pressure hose will cause the pedal to go to the floor and stay there - a seal in a slave or master can cause intermitent failure - a failing master usually also shows fluid on the bellows above the pedal



a bent shifter fork will generally be a consistent issue, and not return back to "normal"

Is there any such thing as a false neutral? I have driven 50 miles since, and no problems.... I pulled back hard into 2nd and the shifter was stuck (bound), it would not move. When I let the clutch up, it just reved. I freed the shifter (with a good amount of effort) and everything has been fine since.

hmmm - intermitent and ghost problems suck - hard to diagnose, especially here - wish the car was here



i wonder if your shifter bushing is cracked, and the ball popped out of the socket



any way for you to compare shifter feel between yoru car and another?

Someone else mentioned that, cant get to a lift until Monday, I'll let you know.

no lift needed to change that bushing - it's under the shifter - it's done from inside the car - takes about 10 minutes



i'd check it against another car though first - if it's cracked or broken, it should be comparitively sloppy
