i just saw a thread pop up over on RL.  once again, misinformation is being bandied about.  there is talk of "gag orders" and "blown head gaskets", and other such nonsense.

 

to clarify, i never had any gag orders, or anything of the sort.  people can talk all they want about the kit.  in fact, i encourage them to do it here.  all i asked is that it not be done in the background, as that would be working in a vacuum, and without accurate and complete information, it would only lead to more misinformation being passed around, which is counter to the interests of the community.  we have a great site here, which is specifically designed to discuss these kinds of things.  it's much better than the "beauty shop" conversations elsewhere, which are nothing more than anecdotal conjecture.

 

as for head gaskets, yes, a couple of them have popped.  however, this was something i discussed in the information package, and has only happened on high mileage engines, or engines that were tracked on a stage 1 kit, or otherwise run counter to advisement, and to my knowledge, has not happened in over 2 years.  of the 50+ kits out there, they are all currently running.

 

the only things we have really seen are a few idler pulley failures, due to over-tightening of the belt.  this i attribute to my inability to adequately instruct people on tensioning.  after better instruction, the $20 pulley has been replaced and run without issue

 

regardless, now 5 years later has proven to be a tremendous success.

I also saw the thread this morning. Although there's the normal RL disinformation I think that Tamathumper provided a nice, experienced owner's defense of the D1R sc kit that hopefully will stop that thread delving deeper into biased misinformation.

Yeah, that certainly was a rant that went all over the map until some reason prevailed. Maybe there are some bad SC kit manufacturers out there, I don't know, but that was not the way to open the conversation over there, or is it?

I've put over 20K miles over 2 years on the SC3 with no problems whatsoever.  Included in those miles are short commutes, long commutes and 3 road trips which always cook my brakes and tires.  The SC is dishing out the punishment but seems none the worse for wear.  Gag on that.

At 110k my head gasket was ready to go. If I had installed a D1R supercharger (still working with my CFO on that one!) and the gasket had failed, why would I assume that it was the SC's fault? This is an issue with those cars with over 100k, and anyone with even the most remote understanding of the internal combustion engine would understand that an SC is going to stress a gasket weakened by age, sometimes to the point of failure.

 

Some people like to throw stones, that's why I don't pay much attention to that "other" site. The info and the people here are better.

MCL, did you have early symptoms of imminent HG failure, or are you referring to visual inspection that revealed deterioration of the paper (non-sealing) parts of the HG upon opening 'er up? Im very interested since im about to replace my original HG based on age and the intermittent observation of coolant expansion tank overpressure, believed to be due to leak-by of combustion gases. I view this as a required repair before considering the SC.

What do you mean, some don't defend you? Preposterous!. I blew my track engine with your proper sc on it. You and I talked about it. I had an engine with 157,000 miles on it. I got  about 18 track events before it went. The first year i drove the car to and from the events, a la Steve McQueen. I just spoke to someone at Thunderbolt this weekend and said, don't you miss the good old days of no truck and trailer? We both laughed. Of course we both replied that now we don't worry about breaking down. I digress.

Big boys make big boy decisions. We weigh the risk factors and decide. I weighed and decided. I don't believe your sc had anything to do with my engine blowing. Whiners and complainers, look in the mirror and then,  shut up!

i didn't say some didn't defend me.  i said it was nice to see people did.

 

in the end, it's all but impossible to know how something is going to react in an unknown situation.  some people rev motors to the redline constantly. others stay in the torque band.  some are in really hot areas.  some aren't.  i did what i could to let people know what to expect, and what to avoid.  after that, like you say, big boys have to make big boy decisions.

 

all in all though, i think this has been a very successful program to date, and i think it will be for some time to come.

Flash - I'm hoping your upcoming news is going to be a big discount on the SC kit. If the bonus supports I hope to be a customer for one. Bonus time comes in late February. I've got the three front braces (two installed, still llooking for time for the firewall brace) and planning on ordering the chassis brace after Christmas so I can get back to HPDEs next year.

No symptoms, just preventative maintenance since we like to take the 968 on road trips and I really don't want to deal with engine issues in the Mojave desert.

No problems and no complaints at all so far, and I have two D1R SC'd 968s ! ( one of which is the only SC'd tiptronic on the planet ) And BTW, I have no qualms about disclosing any problems since apparently Flash completely forgot to send me that " silence contract " everyone else was forced to sign before they could buy the kit . LMAO, the amount of dis-information floating around on various sites is silly beyond words...

Never had it happen with any the Porsches ( although when I had the head rebuilt at 100 k miles the gasket looked very shabby ) but on a couple of the other cars I've had many years ago, when the gasket started to go bad there was coolant in the oil ( milky colored oil ) and vice versa in the coolant tank, a lot of white smoke coming out of the tailpipe even when the car was warmed up, and I forgot what else but remember those few things ..
