Starting problems
#1

Hello

I was hoping for some advice, car did not start last night

1.turned key, starter engaged engine, engine did not catch, so turned off ignition to try again, start kept spinning, its was disengaged from engine, but would not stop until battery disconnected.

2. Left for a while re-connected battery, car had no ignition lights or courtesy light, electrics all dead.

3 Disconnect battery again and re-connected battery, ignition lights came on and car started when ignition turned.

Starter is only 8 months old, all connections and earths seem fine, is there a ignition relay? whch powers up everthing or do you think i have a faulty ignition switch or starter again.

Any ideas would be a help, may not respond quickly as internet connection is poor at my end.

Thanks Simon

First answer is usually swap out the DME relay.

Did you clean the connectors on the starter cable when you replaced the starter?

Are your battery terminals clean and tight?

Also, you my need a new starter bushing. It goes inside the bell housing and receives the starter shaft.

Hello

Thanks for the feed back, when i fitted the starter the connections where all cleaned, i have checked them and they are still clean, and tight. I sorted the bushing out when i fitted the new starter as the old one was cracked. Battery is tight and connections clean, and showingh good condition.

I thought the DME only worked your fuel pump etc? Not the starter circuit?

I have found two relays in the fuse box, marked ignition ? any idea what these are for?

Thanks for the help

Ordy,

Double check both ends of both positive and negative battery cables. Check starter solenoid to make sure that the power cable and signal wire are not close to each other. Look at the solinoid for signs of over heating/being burnt. Make sure engine to chassis ground is in good shape. If not the battery cables/grounds, then probably starter solenoid, then probably ignition switch. Engine running and starter problems may be two different problems. If starting problem gets fixed and engine still will not catch, change out DME relay with the spare that you carry with you <img src="/forum/images/smilies/968/smile.gif" class="smilie" alt="" /> Mitch

I had a similar problem to this - the car had been very slow to crank - thought it may be the battery, but the battery was fine. Occassionally (usually when warm) the starter wouldn't engage, just span over at speed.

One morning I got in the car, started it, and the starter wouldn't disengage - like you I disconnected the battery. I called it a day and got a recon starter. Sorry I can't offer advice, as others have here - just thought I'd let you know you're not alone!

Thanks, for the input, sorry for the late reply, recovering from a operation.

I have asked guys in the know more, and i believe i may have the problems sussed, time will tell when i am fit enough to start work on him again.

I believe its the battery cable, it has a too high resistance as the car starts poor first time, (very slow crank speed)if the car is switched off straight away, the car spins over faster second time ( the oil is still cold)

I have heard alot of guys changing the cables for better quality and that is my route, this would explain the starter keeps running, low battery voltage to the starter make the solenoid connections arc, causing them to stick sometimes, hence starter keeps running.

I will give you a update if i am right in a few weeks , god willing

Cheers

Simon
