It could be 100 things. Did it make any funny sounds when it was dieing or was it quick, and painless. Smoke? Smell? Taste (OK, forget taste). Any obvious wires loose and dangling? All fuses intact? Just stabbing the dark.....

ouch - sounds like they think you bent every valve in there

the good news (if you can call it that) is that independent shops will only charge you about 3k to do the job - we just had a guy here have the same thing happen to him

get a second opinion for sure - they could be right, but at that cost, make sure before they get in there and find it ws something else

I think the dealer would have charged about $1,100 just to take a look...

I was pulling into a friends driveway at less than 5 mph when mine let loose...

Bringing back terrible memories,

It only take one revolution to tag valves that are sticking out. Bummer, but look at it this way, you will have a nice fresh top end and the motor will run sweet!

90k. i was told that because some of these cars tend to be driven only periodically, the timing belt should really be replaced every 4-5 years and not neccessarily based on mileage alone.
