How much does a paint job weigh?
#1

I've heard dozens of stories and logical assumptions about paint weight, but what the heck is the truth regarding the actual weight of a complete, car-gutted, paint job (including door jambs, etc.) when it's all said and done?

I'm trying to lose weight at the same time by removing all the unnecessary crap like back seat, spare tire, etc., and swapping in stuff like lexan here and there, carbon fiber where possible and light weight seats (if the budget allows).

So what I DON'T want to do is spend a gazillion dollars to have the car taken down to the metal if I'm only looking at saving a couple of pounds overall.

Thoughts?

sorry - if you factor in the prep and everything, across the entire body of the car (like they do at the factory) about 20lbs

The olny way your gonna save weight from a paint job is to strip it and not paint it.

IIRC, the reason silver became the German international racing color, is because the first Autounions (AKA the Silver Arrows) of the 30's ran their cars sans paint to save weight.
