Sound clips from the other day.
#21

I have B&B with resonator.

Any Sunday works for me. I can do any Saturday other than this one with a little notice. Damn job gets in the way sometimes.

Perhaps we could meet up in DC?

for the record, i wasn't criticizing the effort, and i apologize if it came off that way - probably part of being a sound guy - always thinking "if only they had done this" - that's one of the reasons i don't go to concerts too though

had i have known that anybody was going to try this, i could have brought stuff to help it out - but, like daryl, i figured this was not on the agenda for this particular meet

i think the key is going to be recording it on something like a laptop with protools, using a shotgun with a sock, off axis, at a distance of about 10 feet - it will definitely have to be a hypercardoid condensor, as a dynamic mic won't get it all - that should mitigate the low end clipping without sacrificing the low frequencies, and at the same time, limiting extraneous background

for comparison, i would also get an spl meter on it at the same time, and at a measured distance

that's what i did in paso when i made the recordings - the problem was that i used a digital recorder that didn't have enough headroom

i also have an entirely different system since then, so i need to do it all over anyway

I'll probably end up using an AKG condensor mic or at least something similar - I'm hoping to have a few to choose from - already have the SPL meter and will most likely use a portable DAT or mini disc. I do still have a functioning 8-track recorder boxed up in my basement closet!

Seriously, let's make this happen. Mark and Patrick, if you want to send PM or e-mail, let's figure something out. I've got plenty of parking lot at my office where we could setup an actual drive by as well. Mark, since you were last at my place, I've acquired another unit dedicated to car stuff, and it's in the same complex 5 doors down.

if you are going to use a DAT or something like it, run through a compressor first - then you can open up the gain - that's why i mentioned the laptop with protools - you can use one that is built in - also easier to edit the clips and make files

oh hell, just drive the cars inside a recording studio and then you won't have to worry about mitigating anything

I tried to attach a sound clip of my BB at WOT that was taken with a cell phone ! a few years ago just to give you a comparison of the lowest tech recording ...which surprisingly ( at least to to my ears ) still sounds awsome, but it won't load into the post - it's only about 6 seconds, and quicktime format but it's the " file extension". that apparently prevents it. . not sure what that means or how to solve it..

OK, I guess I'm in with the B&B. The wives or preferred persons probably would look at us with incredulous looks for listening to car exhausts. I recently saw a Porsche commerical just about exhausts from current Porsches. It was great. So, name the date and place and I should be able to be there.

Email it to me and I should be able to convert it.

If you guys need a stock set up, I'm your guy. I'd love to be on hand to hear the B&B vs the RSB live. Good stuff!

true enough - no worries - not suggesting that it be held off just for me - just offering to help out and join in if it is decided to wait that long

either way, recordings are good - the ones we have now are at least comparative to some degree - the ones i have are too, but i opted not to post them, because like these, they lack he real bottom end that you can hear in person - none of them are horrible, or anything like that - but, it tends to make them all sound a lot higher and "ricier" than they really are - it's a little like looking at the cars through a pair of colored sunglasses though, which is why i held off on posting mine, and wanted to do it again with better gear

should be a fun day though, no matter who does it or when - i look forward to hearing what anybody comes up with - this is fun stuff no matter how you look at it

Hey Flash, what are your thoughts on using an EQ to bring out the bass from recordings? Is this something you would do while recording, or in post process? The equipment I have isn't the best, but its not bad either, and has a number of built in processors (EQ, compressor, limiter, etc) so I'm wondering if I should use them at all while I'm on site. The pickup is decent from both the Edirol and camcorder, but from past experiments I've either overloaded the mic and clipped, or lost the low end like you say. Of course, I didn't have any headphones with me to review the recordings, so by the time I got home and heard the poor results I didn't feel like going back out and rerecording. Laziness doesn't help in these situations lol

I think between all of us we'll create the world best 968 audio / video library

definitely post - always record flat - i'm not even a fan of using compression or anything, but in this case, there is no option

that's why you need to use a shotgun, which is designed for this, and on a boom, and not a built in mic on a camera - sennheiser makes a good one - so does audix (that's the one i use for stuff like this, but the sennheiser for film and television) - something with at least 120db of limit

the sock or zeppelin is essential to cutting out wind noise and impact from the exhaust too - if you point the mic right at it, you get hit with air pressure waves that distort the sound - you want to position the mic off axis, at about a 45 degree angle to the source for this type of recording, at a distance beyond the air pressure wave

then, the recording medium needs to be able to handle it too - something with at least 16bit processing, and preferably 24 to get better bottom end - sample rate at least 44.1k and preferably 48k (or better) - that's why i suggested a laptop with protools - easy to set up - easy to record - no headroom issues - DAT is ok, but you need outboard gear to get it right (compressor, etc) whereas the protools setup has it built in - DAT is also only 16bit, so the bottom end is limited, just as any other 16bit system

that's why i haven't done another recording - it will take a half day to get it right, recording 4 or 5 cars, including drive by recordings - i tried to cram it into a half hour, and got "junk" - garbage in garbage out - i knew better, but tried it anyway

anyway, that's what you need to do if you want people to hear what it really sounds like - otherwise you get the comments like "sounds raspy" and things like that - that's also why i get paid a lot of money to do stuff like that - it isn't simple or quick

then of course, you have to play it back on something that can handle it too - even my computer speakers don't do it justice, and i have a sub on them - i have to play it back through my studio monitors to get the full effect
