Sometimes Porsche is not the best source
#1

I had to order a new radiator. I was in a hurry. None of the less expensive suppliers, including Sunset could get it to me in time. So, I ordered one from my local dealer. Even with my discount, it was still going to be $550. Ouch! But, I had to have it the next day.

The radiator comes in. I open the box to see that it was the right one, which it was, and off I went. I never for a second considered any other issue.

When I got back, I installed the radiator, buttoned everything up, filled it up, and fired up the car. It immediately started spraying coolant all over my shop floor AGAIN! (I hate dealing with coolant almost as much as I hate dealing with brake fluid.)

Upon inspection, I found that the passenger side tank had been cracked. It seems that not a lot of care was taken in the packaging or the handling. The stub that would be for the Tiptronics had taken an impact and cracked the tank. Crap! This was also the last one in the country through Porsche.

So, I went with a parts dealer in Florida, who had a warehouse in the valley here. It arrived the next day. The box was completely encased in bubble wrap. The radiator was flawless. On top of that, it was EXACTLY the same radiator I got from Porsche. It was the same manufacturer, with the same stickers and part numbers and everything. It was also $150 less, with no sales tax or shipping charges. Cool!

Here are some shots showing the cracked tank, the damaged box on the inside, and the Porsche tape that somebody put all over the box to hide the damage. That one really floored me.

Wow, that's really pathetic. Like they figured you wouldn't notice coolant spewing all over the place?!

Sorry for your trouble Flash. Like they say, "it's always somethin."

I got a head gasket from Sunset that had been pushed into a shipping box shorter than the head gasket. That put a kink in the head gasket. Sunset took it back with a full refund, but it was still a pain.

I guess the lesson is to look at the outside packing very carefully. If there is damage, it can sure be an indicator of trouble inside.

I once read that if you are in a business that requires shipping, that you should send a package to yourself and look at its condition when it arrives. I think many companies don't realize how badly things can get mangled.

i get that part. the part that bugs me is that they either tried to cover it up, or were just too lame to inspect the part when they saw the box damage. either way, that's no way to run a business.

interesting side note: according to my local dealer, i was able to buy this part for less than he can. how screwy is that?

Guys,

If that makes you wonder "I can buy the, part cheaper than the dealer" - check out the prices for a new Porsche over here.

Porsche announced yesterday, cuts of 5% to 12% on their cars and 25% on parts prices. A 911 that sells for $85,000 in the USA, sells here for $200,000 plus, even though the AUD:USD is around 1.05:1.

Getting ripped off seems to be an Australian thing.

Same for iTunes, etc. we pay double what the same item sells for in the USA. I could understand when the exchange rate was $0.50, but not now. Australia has been a profit factory for overseas brands for a while now.

Still, crap is crap. A brand like Porsche should not be selling faulty parts.

Someone recently told me that they asked Porsche over here for a rear glass hatch and were quoted around $7,000. Anyone ever asked for a price?
