Tail of the Dragon
#1

I just got back yesterday from 4 days of motorcycle riding up in Western North Carolina. We towed our Ultra's up there from Tampa and road up 276 to the Blue Ridge Parkway and then on to Maggie Valley. We left Greenville about 9:00 last Friday and the forecast was calling for overcast all day with rain late in the day. When we got up to the Parkway, we were going to ride 35 miles East and up Mt. Mitchell, (highest point east of the Mississippi), but it started to drizzle. On with the rain suits and started west to Maggie Valley. At about 5500 feet, we were really in the clouds and I couldn't see the bike flashers in front of me only 20 ft ahead at 15 MPH........Whew!! that was interesting. We finally got great weather on Saturday and road 74 east to 28 then North on 28 to 129 at Deals Gap to ride the Tail of the Dragon and complete the 120 mile "loop" closing with the Charahola Skyway. While the ride on the Harley was really sweet, I couldn't help but thinking how great those same roads would have been in the 968. We closed the weekend by riding the Parkway back from Maggie Valley to 215S then to 178S. Also 2 really great roads.
If your ever going to be in that part of North Carolina in your car or a bike...................the whole area is probably the best riding (or driving) in the country. Its definetly worth adding to the bucket list.

They are some great roads and really fun in the 968.. Unless of course you get stuck behind a motorcycle and they have no interest in pulling off and letting you by...

Great riding. I live about 20 minutes from mount mitchell and if anyone is going to be in the area, give me a call. I can show you roads that make the tail of the dragon look like an interstate. Always ready to do some twisties in Porsche or on bike. Wife and I went out yesterday looking at leaves in the carrerra 4 ( yes, should have taken the 968. more fun to drive twisties in. ) and found some more excellent roads around the north side of beech mountain, NC. Leaf color was beautiful and at the higher elevations everything was covered with about an inch of snow. Wife would not let me put the top down, but still a good ride. By the way, we have vacation rental cabins just off the Blue ridge parkway if anyone is going to be in the area. mountainman 828 385 3100

Where about on the Parkway? We were talking about going back up there in June/July.

I do miss some of the roads from western NC, eastern TN and southwestern VA. If you know where to look some of the best for bikes and sports cars around.

I used to communt up to Tazewell VA from Mouth of Wilston VA along RT 16 was always great and not much traffic.
