So many tools, so little room
#1

Last year I enjoyed going to and participating in several DE events put on by the local PCA club and CarGuys. Some guys show up with almost their whole garage in their enclosed trailers which I am trying to avoid from doing. I know what I need to bring to the event except for my tools. I have 1/2, 3/8, and 1/4 drive socket sets, box end wrenches, open end wrenches, torque wrenches, etc. What I am hoping to carry are just the minimum set of tools. I know the old addage that the tool you will need at the track was left at home in the garage. I am hoping to compile a list of every size that I will need and leave behind what I will never need (like my standard sets). Does such a list exist? Does there exist a list of all the nut sizes that are on a 968? I know to bring multiples of some of the popular sizes but do I really need to carry my 33mm socket to every event? What allen wrenches do I need? (yes, I just did order a triple square set due to earlier forum reading). I have a set of C-Clip Pliers (internal and external), is there a possible need to take them? Any input would be helpful and I will be happy to post a compiled list when complete. Thanks in advance!

I'll chime in on that. Take the basics and there will be plenty of people willing to lend you anything you didn't bring, so don't sweat it too much.

i'm not familiar with the term "wheel brace"

is that what we call a wheel chock? (something you stick behind a wheel to keep a car from rolling)

or maybe a jack stand? (something you stick under the car to support it)

but definitely good items both

NOOOOO!

gaffer's tape is much better than duct tape for most applications - it does not leave the gooey residue, sticks to itself much better, and is easy to tear strips from - it's 4 times the price, but it works sooooo much better

however, duct tape works better in the rain

Never heard of Gaffers tape around these parts, we in the South like our good old gray duct tape, or those fancy colors if we want it to blend in with our paint.

no worries - it's also called "racer's tape" - i understand the common mistake of thinking it's the same as duct tape though - same width and look, but not the same material or adhesive

A wheel brace is something that you remove the wheel nuts with...

What do you call that over your side of the pond...??? Wheel wrench.???

ah - since we call them lug nuts, we call it a lug wrench - on these wheels though, they usually don't work, so we need a breaker bar and a socket

OK,

I know that there are many guys willing to lend tools at events. The guys in my local PCA club are always willing to not only lend tools but hands and knowledge as well. However, being a true boy scout coupled with my ski patroller mentality, I want to be prepared. I have been to an event where the guy who was always counted on to bring something in particular didn't come. Therefore, I am still looking for a comprehensive list of what metric tools to bring to the event. I have my own list for all the other particulars and will post my current check list here so you can add to it or suggest subtracting if you see fit.

Your list looks pretty good to me. I carry just about everything that you have on your list except for the 1/4 drive torque wrench. I would take everything that you have on your tool list if it fits in a portable too box. I have a portable tool box that I keep just for my track tools. After 10 years of doing this, here are a couple of things that are on my list that I didn't see on yours:

Magnetic and/or mechanical retriever / grabber thingies for the times when you drop <insert necessary small part name here> into the <insert part of car that you cannot get to without removing other car parts here>.

Assorted 3/8 drive allen sockets

Motive Brake Bleeder and catch bottle

Extra Heater Control Valve

Assorted rubber block off plugs that you can find at you favorite auto parts store to block off things like the HCV water lines.

Assorted bungee cords

You'll figure out what's missing off the list the first time that you need it and don't have it. <img src="/forum/images/smilies/968/ohmy.gif" class="smilie" alt="" />

Good Luck!

Thanks Mike!

All good ideas.

I will add magnetic retriever. Have one in my garage box, just never moved it to the track tool box.

Plan to get my own Brake Bleeder, just haven't yet.

Will put Assorted 3/8 drive allen sockets on my wish list as well. Have standard set, not metric.

Never thought of rubber block off plugs. Good Idea!

Did list heater control valve (in parts box).

What are the bungee cords for? To hold on loose parts? Up in Virginia we use Duct Tape, aka WVA bondo. <img src="/forum/images/smilies/968/tongue.gif" class="smilie" alt="" />

lol - sounds like somebody needs a trailer - this was the slippery slope that got me mine

something to remember is that any repair at the track is suspect, and it may not be worth the risk - i carry a ton of tools in the trailer, but even then, i draw some pretty hard lines when it comes to the repair and whether or not i would subject it to track abuse - even just to get you home, a tow home is usually cheaper than something snapping and wrecking the car, or worse - it's also pretty hard to convince the officer filling out the accident report that all that stuff in the back is NOT because you just came from the track, and your insurance company doesn't care

bottom line, i only carry the tools for repairs i would trust

I don't take the car to tracks but I do have a set of tools in the car at all times for roadside repairs. While I have metric combo wrenches and socket sets in the basic tool set, I have added another set of wrenches to my on-board tool kit, <b>metric flare nut wrenches</b>. The 968 has several fuel line connectors, belt adjusters, etc..., that round too easily with an open end wrench, but have a shaft or tube preventing the use of a socket or closed end wrench. I have a set in the car and another one at home with my set of Metric flexible head GearWrenchs.

lol - i'm glad you said it first - i am imagining the car sagging pretty low in the back with all that stuff - there is a weight limit you know (639lbs)

at least it's not a cab, where the total weight limit for passengers AND gear is 397lbs

No worries about weight or room in the car mates. When we head to the track it is loaded onto a car trailer with all of the tools and other paraphenalia loaded into the tow vehicle.

ah - SWEET!

much better idea anyway - in that case, pack whatever tools and such for any job you feel comfortable doing - a battery powered sawzall, die grinder, drill package isn't a bad idea - i carry one of those in my trailer
